President's Report

As I was the only one to stand still long enough I am now representing the ACT Group as president. Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy to be given this opportunity and hope that I can maintain the momentum that Paul Bombardier encouraged and created so well. On that note and on behalf of ACT members I would like to wholeheartedly offer thanks to Paul for all of his time and energy as the ACT president.

A big thank you is also due to the committee members and those other members that have contributed to the activities and meetings over the past couple of years..…let’s keep it rolling!

Thanks also to:
• Matt – keep that newsletter coming!
• Paul and Kylie – keep that national office running and progressing so well!

Note:
Please be prepared - as president I will be asking for comments and feedback from members on various issues as they arise. My intention is for this to compensate for my lack of knowledge and experience in many areas of LA and I hope it will also provide a democratic and considered representation of ACT Group views.

Online Employment Directory restructure

The AILA web-master wishes to inform members that the job service listing for non-member organisations has gone through a minor cost-restructure.

The job site listing service is still free for members and member organisations.

As of Friday September 17 the cost for non-members to list job vacancies will be $200.00 plus GST. The small increase of $25 per listing is to cover ever expanding on-line service costs and help provide greater benefits and a more streamlined service for the profession at large.

Please direct any queries or comments to Matt Thornton.

Getting dirty at the McKellar Wetland

On Sunday October 17, many of Canberra’s Landscape Architects & students joined forces with local volunteers to plant grasses & reeds at the remodelled McKellar wetland. The wetland designed by DSB Landscape Architects, will provide habitat for frogs & aquatic wildlife and a recreation asset for the new McKellar housing development. Fittingly the ‘Choosing Sustainable Landscape Materials’ brochure, produced by the local AILA branch was launched at this event.

Volunteers mass planted Poa, Juncus, Carex & Eleocharis along the water margins, whilst children collected & examined a teeming variety of aquatic invertebrates.

It was a worthwhile event, bringing together people from a range of disciplines to assist in establishing a new community resource.

Choosing Sustainable Landscape Materials

Environmentally friendly practices for your garden.
Today gardeners and designers have a wide range of landscape materials to choose from. Along with integrating environmentally sustainable practices such as using plants requiring little artificial watering, we can make a difference by selecting landscape materials wisely. This brochure is intended as a guide to making informed choices regarding landscape materials. Please click here to read the AILA brochure (PDF) on choosing sustainable materials for gardens.
