President's message
Over
the past 6 months the AILA ACT Chapter has been very productive,
with much work behind the scenes by many members preparing for up and
coming
events. The Industry Night to be held during Floriade is well and
truly under way. Also coming up in October is the Margaret Hendry Lecture
Series
as part of the National Capital Lecture Series. It promises to
be a fabulous event with Catherine Bull giving the inaugural lecture.
Longer term there
is planning underway for the 2006 Awards and the Awards Night – dates
and jury soon to be announced.
On behalf of all ACT chapter members I would like to give a huge thank
you to all those (to many to list here) involved in organising for these
events. A big thank you is also due to David Moyle, Alan Peggie and Helen
Cohen for undertaking the 2005 interviews for new associate members.
And of course a thank you also to all the committee members and other
members that have attended meetings, contributed to email discussions
and generally helped out when needed.
The other high lights, relevant to LA in Canberra, over the past 6 months
are the City Hill proposals and discussions. This is a high profile and
extremely important topic that we all must keep on top of and be ready
to input into the planning process that ACT Planning have begun this
month.
The other potentially
important project underway at the moment is the University of Canberra,
School of Design and Architecture’s proposal
to bid for a grant from the Collaboration and Structural Reform Fund.
It is early days so far, with preliminary discussions held this week.
More information will be circulated as it comes through from UC.
Closer links with
the UC Landscape Architecture Club are being formed. With Paul Costigan
giving a presentation to the Club members earlier
in the year, ACT Chapter’s sponsorship of a digital projector for
UC LA department and the potential affiliation of the Club with AILA
being investigated. There is still more potential to be built on in terms
of interaction between the Canberra LA professional community and the
UC. Let’s keep the energy flowing!
