Searching For Sustainability In Canberra Gardens

Category: Design
Special Award:  the 2008 AILA National Edna Walling Award

Canberra, like many inland cities and towns in Australia has experienced changing climate conditions resulting in prolonged drought and sever water shortages. The role of the landscape architect is to be commended in designing and promoting a sustainable garden model for Canberra that has wide community application.

These series of four residential scale gardens are a model for promoting landscape environmental sustainability and urban biodiversity.  The gardens are an evolution of the Ônative gardenÕ embraced widely during the 1970Õs in Australia and provide a contemporary landscape solutions founded in recycling, water conservation and sustainable planting combining native and introduced species.
