The slow greening – residential clients

Originally published in Landmark July 2006.

This paper reports on environmental initiatives clients request when commissioning a Landscape Architect to provide a residential landscape design.  Whilst clients in Sydney and Canberra seem fairly savvy those in other states where water is not currently a hot issue are still in the dark.  We need more examples of contemporary sustainable garden design with interpretation which are on display to the public.

Edwina Richardson set out to practise what she preaches in the redesign of her suburban Canberra Backyard.

Landscape Architects often use their own gardens to experiment with design ideas.  In the Richardson’s Canberra garden, many sustainable principles have been put in place.  Landscape materials such as concrete pavers and house bricks are re-used to create an outdoor terrace whilst a hardy plant palette create functional and textural compositions.

Historic Gardens

The Spirit of St Omer

4 pages, unpublished

St Omer is a historic garden in the Braidwood district with heritage links to Woden Homestead and Government House in the ACT.  It is a representative example of an ordered Georgian garden with a symmetrical arrangement of garden beds around a central path.  Plant material used in the garden was hardy to cope with the harsh local climate.
