The IFLA Eastern Region Conference welcomes the partners of all delegates to register for the conference evening functions. During the day, we have arranged for a program of special tours designed to provide visiting partners with an exciting and entertaining experience that provides a taste of cosmopolitan Sydney and its fabulous surrounds.

All tours are ticketed activities and must be pre-booked.

ROCKS WALKING TOUR AND GEMSTONE EDUCATIONAL

Thursday 25 May 2006
9.30am

Take a ferry ride to Circular Quay for a guided walking tour through the historic Rocks area.

Discover the unique beauty of Australian gemstones in the form of South Sea Pearls, Argyle Diamonds and Opals at a local gemstone merchant. A 15 minute gemstone educational will be provided with morning tea.

Then take some time out to explore the lovely boutiques and specialist stores in the area; have lunch at the Lowenbrau or other local eatery and walk around the Circular Quay boardwalk to the Opera House. Meet the group back at Circular Quay for the Sydney City to Bondi coach tour.

SYDNEY CITY TO BONDI

Thursday 25th May 2006
2.00pm

Tour Sydney’s bustling city precincts including Circular Quay, the Opera House, the historic Conservatorium of Music, Hyde Park and the Notre Dame-inspired St Mary’s Cathedral.

Enjoy politics and culture as you tour along Macquarie Street, taking in Parliament House, the Mint, Sydney Barracks and then on to the Art Gallery and the parklands of the Domain. See Sydney Town Hall, Sydney Tower and capture the view from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.

Experience the colourful Royal Botanic Gardens, the breathtaking views from the Gap and walk along the famous Bondi Beach. See the splendid terrace houses of Paddington and Double Bay and tour through Rushcutters Bay, home of the prominent Royal Cruising Yacht Club.

Enjoy the bohemian beat of lively Kings Cross as you tour through to Darling Harbour. Taste the city’s historic and contemporary flavour in one afternoon.

HUNTER VALLEY TOUR

Taste the Australian bush and some of the country’s finest food and wines on this off-road adventure to the Hunter Valley in modern 13-seat 4WD coaches with air conditioning and aircraft style seating.

After leaving Sydney via the Harbour Bridge, we’ll cross the Hawkesbury River with expansive views up and down the waterway. Our first stop is Broken Bay Harbour where we enjoy morning tea and panoramic water vistas. Next we’ll pass through Cooranbong, the first village established outside old Sydney town, now known for horse riding and its tranquil bush trails. Our safari continues onto the Watagan State Forest where we ascend quiet bush logging trails, pass through forests of giant hardwood eucalypts and gullies of lush rainforests. The Hunter Valley Lookout will reveal our destination and be the place to witness a boomerang and didgeridoo demonstration.

Our first stop in the Hunter is Hungerford Hill Winery and the Terrior Restaurant, the superb modern cuisine is a memorable dining experience.

After lunch we travel on to another favourite in the Hunter region, Pepper Tree Estate, featuring the old Convent Guest House, other historic buildings and handsome gardens. This state-of-the art winery enjoys a well deserved reputation, producing wines which regularly win prizes in national and international competitions.

A visit to Audrey Wilkinson Winery, with its great range of cellar-door only wines and spectacular views of the Hunter Valley will complete your experience of the wines and charm of this region.

Departing at approximately 4.00pm we travel back to Sydney via the Expressway, arriving in Sydney between 6 & 6.30 pm.

BLUE MOUNTAINS WILDERNESS TOUR

7.45am

Experience a gentle off-road adventure, taking the time to relax and experience the true essence of the Blue Mountains in modern 13-seat 4WD coaches with air conditioning and aircraft style seating.

Our tour leaves Sydney via the Sydney Harbour Bridge and onto Featherdale Wildlife Park for a close up view of one of the best collection of Australian animals. After passing through the historic early settlement town of Richmond and crossing the Hawkesbury River, we drive along the Bells Line of Road. This is the land of the Mountain apple and the northwestern passage over the mountains. Breathe in the invigorating scent of the Australian Eucalyptus as we travel into the Burralow Creek National Park, a young river Canyon.

A short walk along this trail will reveal towering Eucalypts, Red
Gums, Grass Trees and other varieties of Australian Flora. Access to this area is restricted and is one of the highlights of the tour. Your guide will interpret the Fauna and Flora encountered, Aboriginal history and demonstrate the Didgeridoo.

Lunch and a glass of wine at the Mount Tomah Botanical Gardens restaurant with spectacular views and award winning modern cuisine will reveal Australia’s coolest Botanical Gardens with unique Australian a overseas plants and trees.

After lunch, soak up magnificent views of Govetts Leap Lookout, then the Jamieson Valley, and the Three Sisters famous rock formation and Scenic Railway optional (at own cost).

Afternoon Tea will be a close up experience with wild kangaroos and sulphur-crested cockatoos in the Glenbrook National Park.
