Jury Citation for Innovation in Community Consultation
PERUNFILO 'BY A THREAD'
Landscape Architect: Carlo Missio in collaboration with Artists: Emmanuela
Ascari, Valentina Vetturi and Vera Uberti
In devising a consultation and information gathering tool
for Landscape and Urban Design Planning for a hill city in Italy, Carlo
Missio, in collaboration with three artists, designed a game - a game that could be played by all of the various
residents and business owners and visitors, no matter what age group.
The game comprised a series of small picture tiles with
images on opposing faces of each tile. Participants were invited to sort
through the various tiles, selecting their preferred face and arrange them
on a board producing a rectangular montage close in size to an A2 sheet.
Participants could choose to display any number of tiles, depending on how
the images affected them or provoked a response.
Perunfilo ‘By a Thread’ is an ingenious idea developed
through interdisciplinary and cross cultural collaboration that traverses the problems of language, reluctance, apathy and suspicion
that form the normal impediments to community consultation. Through this
simple game of choosing images, the community engaged and opened up to
strangers to talk about their aspirations and hopes and opinions when
normally they wouldn’t. Further adaptations of this approach to
consultation are both limitless and exciting in their possibilities.
