The project was led by AILA with funding from the Australian Commonwealth Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) contributed scientific advice and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) provided global reach and awareness.
Common organisational goals for the project were:
-
To examine the potential role of climate adaptation tools within the urban environment to assist progress towards broader sustainability objectives.
-
To identify the ‘value-add’ potential of integrated urban landscape planning, design and management strategies to support broader, collaboratively-based responses to the many challenges of climate change and urban sustainability.
-
To promote understanding of natural and urban ecosystem processes and their relevance to people, using this knowledge to improve climate adaptation responses across a range of urban settlement types and landscape scales.
-
To explore the socio-cultural, economic and ecosystem context within which urban landscape planning, design and management decisions are made, and to identify barriers and opportunities for progress towards climate adaptation.
-
To critically review and identify best practice exemplars of climate adaptation tools as options for future support and adoption by government and industry.
A reference group representing key research, industry and professional stakeholder groups within the urban environment in Australia and overseas was developed, to provide a conduit for collation of broad stakeholder input and review.
Project details and updates are available online: www.aila.org.au/climate.
The project was undertaken over a 12 month period from July 2009 to June 2010 comprising three separate work/reporting stages as follows:
Stage One
-
Desktop review to identify tools and strategies: National & International
-
Identification of stakeholder group for consultation: National and International consultation networks identified
-
Preparation of consultation/stakeholder engagement document outlining: identified tools and strategies to date, preliminary criteria for assessing ‘best-practice’ Climate Adaptation Tools, preliminary discussion of perceived strengths and weaknesses, invitation to submit extra materials and comment on the approach
-
Deliverable 1 – 31.10.09: Progress Report One to Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
Stage Two
-
Consultation response period for national/international stakeholder groups
-
Collation of responses - interim assessment and review of project strategy
-
Investigation and incorporation of additional material in response to feedback
-
Additional consultation as identified (Interim reporting of outcomes to Project Advisory Group – e.g., IFLA, Department of Climate Change, and the CSIRO)
-
Refined document report – possible final review by targeted stakeholder group
-
Deliverable 2 – March 2010: Progress Report to Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
Stage Three
-
Preparation of Final Report incorporating feedback and revisions as identified
-
Deliverable 3 – June 2010:Final Project Report* to Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
-
Publication and promotion of findings (hardcopy and online) through national and international networks of the project advisory and stakeholder groups consulted.
*This report being the Final Project Report as outlined above.
