The
membership grade of Fellowship is an honour that the Institute may
bestow upon persons who are or who are eligible to be registered members
of the Institute and is made in recognition of distinguished
service
to the Institute and/or the profession in Australia.
Fellows
are registered members of the Institute, enjoy full voting rights
and may be elected to executive positions at both Federal and State
level.
Fellowship
is bestowed after evaluation by Council and therefore the nomination
and evaluation procedure is conducted 'in confidence'.
When
a nomination
has been accepted by Council, the nominee is invited to accept Fellowship.
Sponsors
and Seconders

The
National Council requires the sponsors to take responsibility for
checking all the documentation and
to maintain a strict level of
confidentiality.

Sponsors
must ensure that the nominations are be prepared without the knowledge
of the person being nominated.

The
documentation must contain clear evidence of the nominees experience
and that it is clearly documented
using the stated criteria
in the attached ‘Guidelines’.
Nomination
Procedure
The procedure for nomination is:
-
Nomination
for Fellow' and 'Citation' forms are completed by two regsitered
members acting as Proposer and
Seconder. The 'Citation'
form summarises the Nominee’s distinguished service.

The
nomination and citation are forwarded through the Executive Director
to the Councillor representing
the nominee's State.

The
Councillor prepares a confidential report in consultation with appropriate
members to verify the information and include additional
information that may assist Council in its evaluation.

The
Councillor forwards this information through the Executive Director
to the Membership
Committee, who ensures there
is sufficient information for Council deliberation.

Council
evaluates the nomination. If approved, the Nominee is invited to
accept Fellowship.

On
acceptance, the membership is advised through publication in the
Institute publications.
Nominations
should normally be received at the National Office 10 days prior to
Council meetings.
Late
submissions will be held for the following meeting.
Fellowship
Assessment Guidelines
The following guidelines should be used in assessing nominations
for Fellowship.
Distinguished
Service To The Institute
There
should be a clear demonstration of support for AILA, its goals and
objectives and participation in raising
the profile and standing
of the
Institute in the community generally, among other professions,
industry, government and to students and other potential
AILA members.
Distinguished
service may be demonstrated through service at the National or State
or International level or
through any
mix of
the same.
The
points below are provided as a guide to assist sponsors in assessing
the level of demonstrated distinguished
service.
National
Level
Distinguished service on AILA Council where the
nominees' contribution is demonstrably
greater than merely
'occupying a seat' for
one or two terms. The contribution
may be evidenced by:
- Executive
Position(s)
- Significant
policy, financial and/or administrative initiatives
- Successful
implementation of particular projects, task forces, committees, etc.
- Role
in National/State coordination and conferences.
- Direct
service, advocacy and support to members and/or particular groups
of members.
- Representation
of AILA in forums outside Council.
- International
liaison with relevant Professional Bodies.
State Level
Distinguished service to a State Group, where the nominee's contribution
is
demonstrably greater than merely occupying an Executive position
or Subcommittee
role
for
one or
two terms. This
greater
contribution
may be evidenced by:
- Pivotal
role in establishing, building up and/or maintaining the Group.
- Significant
policy and/or administrative initiatives.
- Successful
implementation of particular projects, task forces, committees,
etc.
- Role
in National/State coordination and support.
- Conferences,
seminars and Continuing Professional Development.
- Consistency
of service over many years.
- Representation
of AILA in forums outside the State Group.
Distinguished
service to landscape architecture
This covers a wide range of activities but is generally covered by
the following:

A
clear demonstration of support for the profession of landscape architecture

Participation
in raising the profile and standing of the profession in the community
generally, among
other professions, industry and government.

Receipt
of awards, both from the Institute and outside organisations.

Participation
in nationally-significant projects which raise the profile and
standing of the profession.
-
Establishment,
improvement and long-term maintenance of educational standards.
-
Pioneering
new areas for the profession.
-
Providing
a mentor and role-model role for young graduates.
-
Achieving
consistently high standards of work.
-
High
profile within the community.
-
Participation
in research, publications, conferences and seminars.
-
Establishing
and maintaining links with other professions, industry, educational
institutions
and government.
HONORARY FELLOWSHIP
General
The membership grade of Honorary Fellow is an honour which the Institute
may bestow upon persons who have distinguished
themselves in activities in support of the aims and objectives
of the Institute.
They
have all the rights and privileges of Corporate members
except the right to
hold office
or vote.
Within
State Groups, some voting powers have been authorised by Council for
Honorary Fellows,
Graduate,
Students and Affiliates
(see AM
6)
Requirements
Persons nominated must be ineligible
for corporate membership and should
demonstrate distinguished
endeavour which
Council considers
has promoted
or is promoting the aims and objects
of the Institute.
Nomination
Procedure:
The procedure for nomination is
the same as for Fellowship nominations.
