WA senior registered landscape architect appointed to river protection strategy committee

Richard Freeman Appointed to River Protection Strategy Advisory Committee

The role of the Swan River trust was strengthened in September 2007 when the Swan and Canning Rivers Management Act came into effect. The Act provides a new direction for the protection and management of the rivers, and recognises the importance of the rivers as an icon by establishing Riverpark (comprising the waterways and adjacent public land of the Swan, Canning, Helena and Southern rivers).

The Act requires targets for the health and use of  Riverpark to be set and underpinned by a River Protection Strategy, which will also set out management arrangements for meeting these targets.

A River Protection Strategy Advisory Committee has been established to advise the Swan River Trust on development of the strategy and management program.

The Advisory Committee is comprised of 25 members including:

  • Swan River Trust (Chair)
  • State Government Agencies (6)
  • Local Government (7)
  • Regional Groups (2)
  • Indigenous Culture (1)
  • Conservation (1)
  • Recreation & Commercial Use (3)
  • Scientific Studies (1)
  • Planning and Development (1)
  • Community (2)

Richard Freeman was appointed to the committee because of his experience in planning and development in Perth, Northern Territory and ACT.

It is Richards intention to seek advice and comment from the WA Group of AILA over the next 12 months to assist with the preparation of the River Protection Strategy.
