July 2009
| President’s Message |
 |
Thanks to all who have participated or attended a talk or design salon over the last couple of months. The attendance and feedback about the Salons has been overwhelmingly positive, both from members and sponsors alike.
Since the last newsletter, we have had salons at OCULUS and ASPECT Studios, and held our 4 Pillars of Sustainability talk at Tusculum. The 4 Pillars talk highlighted a range of approaches and attitudes to practising sustainable design, ranging from the idiosyncratic design of Phooey Architects to the more socially and environmentally driven work of Material Landscape Architects and the intelligent and wide ranging design work of Derlot Studio.
Planning has commenced for the NSW 2009 AILA Awards, as well as for AILA NSW's involvement in the Sydney Architecture Festival on October 5. We are calling out for participants and organisers to be involved in the SAF which is always a great day.
Congratulations to Clouston Associates who were a star performer at the Sydney Light Festival with their installation 'Cycle!', and thanks to Greg Burgon for assisting with AILA’s participation in the event; and congratulations to AILA Vice President, Adrian McGregor and his team for receiving the TOPOS Award for International Practice of the Year. This is a significant recognition of their work and is encouraging for the practice of sustainable landscape architecture in Australia.
Other up and coming events to keep an eye on are 'By George!", the City of Sydney's Laneways Festival as part of Art and About kicking off in October: includes landscape architects, architects, artists and designers. And of course Sydney Design 09 which is happening all around Sydney from August 1st to 16th.
AILA NSW with several other organisations is also in the process of organising a passive protest at Sydney Olympic Park to raise awareness about the impact of the V8 race which will tear through the site of Sydney's famed 'green games'. Stay tuned for more on this.
I look forward to seeing you at an up coming talk, salon, workshop or president’s lunch.
Cheers,
Sacha Coles

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE ON THE PARK EXPERIENCE
 |
Just for Fun took on a new meaning for Luna Park last month when the gates stayed open all night, not for revelers, but a bunch of Sydney ‘rough sleepers’. |
The discomfort was felt more by the two hundred men and women – an unlikely assortment of Sydney business leaders and public figures – sleeping on the bitumen, trying to make some noise of a positive kind for the plight of Australia’s over 60,000 homeless: men, women and children without an address or basic security which we all expect as a right.
The sweetest sound of all, however, was the ringing up of $615,929 (at last count) in sponsorship from only one night’s inconvenience!
The St Vincent de Paul Society, organiser of the event, has directed this sum to education for the homeless and those in rehab through its new Ozinan Centre next to the Matt Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo
AILA NSW Group was very pleased to donate and support Crosbie Lorimer and Leonard Lynch this year.
