PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello to all.

The last month has been a festival of events for AILA NSW.  We have had workshops- Achieving Living Street Trees,   held sell-out talks by two international speakers – Peter Walker from PWP , and Robert Schaefer from TOPOS, announced the winners and held an exhibition of AILA’s  International Design Ideas competition – Sea Change 2030+.

All of these events have been extremely well attended, and thanks to our sponsors we have been able to offer some of these at no cost to members.

The Sea Change 2030+ International competition was a great success. It has not only enhanced our profession’s identity as leaders in the challenging area of designing and  adapting to the effects of climate change, but it has also provided a great opportunity for Landscape Architects to participate in the testing of government policy.

AILA invited CSIRO and both the Department of Planning and the Department of Environment Climate Change and Water to be key public sector partners in the competition. All involved have looked at the competition as a unique pilot project to test the possibilities of designing for sea level rise. AILA will run a follow up competition next year.

Come along to the next AILA Salon at AECOM on the 18th of August   and stay tuned for our next workshop - Water Sensitive Urban Design - Digging Deep on 25th August.

AILA NSW 2010 AWARDS

The NSW AILA Awards 2010 program is underway with the organisation of the jury and requests for awards submissions. They will conclude with the Awards Presentation as part of our end of year/Christmas celebration on Thursday 9 December at Simmer on the Bay, the great venue on the water at Walsh Bay where we celebrated last year.

Awards submissions are due by c.o.b. Thursday 30 September 2010.

Awards Criteria and Entry Forms to be uploaded in a couple of days - watch this space

I would strongly encourage members who haven’t entered before to put in an award submission and  I also encourage practices to enter their residential work in the Design category for  AILA NSW Award for Residential Design, as well as the new AILA NSW Urban Design Award.

Why have awards?... The AILA Landscape Architecture Project Awards promote and advance the profession of landscape architecture by:

  • Fostering public awareness and recognition of the diversity and quality of work undertaken by Landscape Architects.

  • Encouraging best practice by members in all aspects of the landscape profession.

  • Providing opportunity for local, regional, national and global recognition of Australian Landscape Architecture.

How are the awards assessed?...  The Awards process is constantly evolving, being refined and honed; each year improves the operational efficiency of the judging process and maximises the time available to assess each entry.

We also recognise that the jury’s composition has a significant bearing on the direction/ success of the Awards and we are always looking to establish a jury of substance and diversity.

The jury will be finalised by the 27th August, and we welcome submissions from individuals who would be interested in participating in any of the following categories:

  • Design
  • Planning
  • Land Management
  • Research and Communication

These four categories meet the AILA National Awards category guidelines.

This year we are excited about the introduction of the AILA Urban Design Award.  This new award is linked to the above four categories. That is, to be assessed as an Urban Design project, the submission must first satisfy the criteria of one of the four main categories of Design, Planning, Landscape Management or Communication and Research. If the submission is deemed to have met the criteria, the submission may then be assessed against the extra criteria outlined for Urban Design - this criteria is included within the Awards Guidelines.

There will also be other awards:

  • AILA NSW Future Leaders Award for Landscape Architecture Student/Graduate Award.
  • The AILA NSW Award for Residential Designed Landscapes
  • The President’s Award
  • The NSW Planning Minister's Sydney Greenspace Award for Local Government projects
  • The RTA NSW Award for Excellence in Landscape Architecture on Road Infrastructure Projects

When is the judging?... The program for judging is the 14th and 15th October.

Please contact either Christina Bunbury on nsw@aila.org.au  (AILA NSW State Manager) or James Grant on James.Grant@lendlease.com.au  (Awards Committee Chair) by Friday 20th  August if you are interested in being a jury member. It is a very rewarding process.

Can I enter an award and also be on the jury?... No, you can not enter an award and be on the jury.

Can I enter a project in more than one category?... Projects may not be entered into more than one category

Can I skip the State Awards and go straight to National?... Project submissions to the next National AILA Awards will only be accepted on projects that have been submitted to a state award this year.
