AILA NSW TALK SERIES 2008

MELBOURNE 3X3

rush/wright associates       Thompson Berrill Landscape Design       Site Office

Wednesday 23 April, Tusculum  6.00 for 6.30pm

The talk will be a lively discussion from three of Melbourne's most inspired and innovative practices.

Rush/wright associates: Michael Wright
Thompson Berrill Landscape Design: Joanna Thompson
Site Office: Chris Sawyer

Michael Wright is a Director of rush\wright associates, a Melbourne based design consultancy established by him and Catherine Rush in 1999.

The practice now employs more than twenty landscape architects and is focussed primarily on design and documentation of public landscapes and the public domain of private developments. The practice mainly serves clients in Victoria but has delivered projects in NSW, Tasmania, Kazakhstan and in the United Arab Emirates. This work comprehends the complete spectrum of landscape types from small courtyards to new city plans.

Michael maintains a keen interest in the innumerable ways there are of arriving at a design, through design operations and conceptual strategies. Many of these are derived from his education at RMIT, and through teaching exchanges with many talented and provocative students. He will show some of these in a talk entitled 'Where Did I come From?'.

Joanna Thompson is a Director of Thompson Berrill Landscape Design Pty Ltd (TBLD) which is an innovative firm of Landscape Architects with specific skills in the areas of strategic open space and environmental planning, masterplanning, urban design and waterway planning with high standards of technical and graphic outputs. Established in 1992, TBLD work extensively for state and local government agencies, along with private and community-based organisations in Victoria and NSW.

TBLD have earned a reputation for innovation and excellence in  Environmental Planning and Site Design and integrate this throughout their design and planning work. Their experience and skills in site investigation, integrated environmental planning and design recommendations, site responsive designs, stakeholder, client and community consultation informs projects undertaken by TBLD. They offer expertise in diverse environments from coasts to parklands and  waterways, and in sites with important environmental, heritage and recreational values.

Chris Sawyer is a Director of Site Office, a a landscape architectural consultancy specialising in public space design. Site Office is interested in public spaces that move beyond limiting oppositions such as Nature and Artifice and accept that landscape is as much a cultural construct as architecture.

They celebrate the expressive potential of terrain and the Australian condition; explore the relationship between internal and external and acknowledge the dissolving boundaries between disciplines. They seek specific solutions for specific problems, and avoid generalisations.

They embrace the rich, new terrain that geometry has opened up, allowing a sculpting of landscape in three dimensions not two. Site Office seeks out collaborations wherever possible, and develops flexible working models that break through traditional standards.

Finally, they have a commitment to innovative, quality design that is a reflection of a complex, diverse and ever-changing society.
