Climate Adaptation

What does it mean for Landscape Architects?

Guest Speaker Dr Jane Tarran

Jane is currently working with AILA National on  the Federally funded project -  Developing Climate Change Adaptation Skills for Landscape Architects.

Jane will talk about the AILA Project, Climate Change Adaptation Skills for Landscape Architects and how this will impact on our education and practice. As well, Jane will present the opportuinities that we have as landscape architects to lead this strategic discussion.
Two papers on this Project have been on the AILA website since January, inviting feedback from the membership.

Further points discussed will be:

  • Impacts of Climate Change on Human Settlements
  • Human responses to Climate Change information
  • Mitigation and adaptation strategies to deal with Climate Change
  • Roles of Landscape Architects in Climate Change Adaptation, and skills needed
  • Urban ecosystems and their functioning in a climate changed future
  • Feedback to date on the papers associated with the project

About Jane.

Jane was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) where she developed the interdisciplinary course of Bachelor of Science in Urban Ecology.

Jane has over 20 years experience in university teaching and research in a range of areas, including urban vegetation management, urban forestry, plant pathology, landscape design history, open space management, botany and horticulture.

Recently, she has been promoting, to various audiences, the concept of urban forestry and urban greening and the benefits that flow to people and their cities from well-managed urban vegetation. Increasingly, these talks on Green Infrastructure have focussed on issues of biodiversity and climate change, in addition to the provision of sustainable and life-enhancing urban environments for people.

When not working, Jane prefers to spend time in green environments, whether in the bushland or parks of Australia or gardens overseas, including those of Japan.
