Sustainability assessment + landscape?

26 May 2010

The past 12 months have seen a number of sustainability frameworks announced to the planning and development communities.  These seek to guide development as to better sustainability and environmental performance amongst other objectives.

At this time however, it is still unclear how landscape factors will be effectively woven into this important realm of planning evaluation for urban development.

How can sustainability frameworks and assessment models best integrate landscape factors both in terms of existing site values and as performance enhancing measures?

This workshop aims to provide a forum for these questions through:

1.  a brief update on the status of two recently released sustainability models / frameworks:

    Precinx - Landcom
Communities Tool - Green Building Council of Australia GBCA

2.  an examination of current directions and recent innovations in holistic sustainability (Emma Synnott, Arup Australia)

3.  A workshop session to discuss the priorities and possible strategies for integration of landscape factors into sustainability models and sustainability performance assessment (facilitated by Dr Jane Tarran)

Participants include

Roderick Simpson

As principal of the architectural and urban design practice simpson+wilson,  Roderick Simpson led the urban design and spatial planning of the recently released Sustainable Sydney 2030 Strategy and was involved in the development of the “City of Cities” Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney between 2003 and 2007.

He has been an active advocate of ecologically sustainable design principles, culminating in the formulation of “BASIX”, the NSW Building Sustainability Index that applies to all residential development in NSW.

Roderick’s projects have received recognition including the Premiers Award for Architecture, RAIA Presidents Award, and Merit Awards and PIA Award for Excellence in Urban Planning.
