DARWIN ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE AND HOLIDAY INN FORECOURT

Landscape Architect: Clouston Associates
Jury Citation:
The project, lead by a landscape architect, is significant for Darwin.
The project was a retrofit of an existing and tired looking complex and Clouston's leadership has delivered a distinctly Darwin feel to the centre through the use of lightweight overhead structures, native plants and local natural materials.
The other key elements of the project's upgrade is it is now a DDA compliant site, includes the use of structural soil which is a first for Darwin and has captured space for pedestrians which was previously devoted to carparking.
The jury was impressed that the landscape architect was able to bring the property owners on board with ideas which would have added to the cost with no obvious financial gain to the development.
The Jury also commended the landscape architect in his leaderhip to Council to embrace a more progressive approach to tree planting and use of materials.
The leadership of the landscape architect:
Clouston Associates were the Head Consultant and Lead Designer for the project from masterplanning, through design and documentation and construction supervision. Clouston Associates were responsible for all works associated with demolition, waterproofing, drainage, access and all BCA compliance issues, lighting, pavements, walls and other hard landscape elements, planting and irrigation.
In addition, throughout the project, Clouston Associates provided design input and overview for the ‘Raft’ and ‘Dugong Ribs’. This was in the areas of overall design quality and character, design coordination, access and cost control. External lighting was designed by Clouston Associates and documented by TCM Engineers.
Building works associated with a new bar, toilet facility upgrades, a first floor verandah and canopy to the Darwin Entertainment Centre was undertaken by Troppo Architects.
