Landscape Architect: Cardno S.P.L.A.T.

Location: Brisbane Airport Landscape Masterplan

The Airport lies on the eastern edge of the city of Brisbane and is located within the river delta of the Brisbane River and Kedron Brook on Moreton Bay.

Overview

The Brisbane Airport Landscape Masterplan was produced to enable all aspects of Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) to have a clear and defined landscape vision in the ongoing development of existing areas and future design of the individual sites and precincts throughout the airport.

The intention of the masterplan is to guide BAC's development and commercial managers at the early land use planning stages of development, as well as operations and maintenance teams and current and prospective tenants to ensure that the landscape (both public realm and lease areas) is an integrated part of the development rather than being treated as unwanted or left over space. It is also designed to be precinct specific, and can be applied to super lot development sites as a guiding element both at the design stage and also at the BAC assessment and approval stage.

The Brisbane Airport Landscape Masterplan deals with a unique, high profile site that has complex set of opportunities and constraints that have informed the direction of the document and the proposals for the precincts. The recommendations in the report have been formed following consultation with a diverse group of stakeholders with different priorities, whether they’re airport commercial managers, terminal managers or maintenance contractors.

Cardno S.P.L.A.T. worked closely with BAC throughout the production of the masterplan to ensure that the unique requirements of the airport were met in the in all aspects of the document. The masterplan process was broken up into the following three phases:

Analysis

This included analysis of the site, a literature review of the previous masterplan documents for the airport and a study of comparative airports around the world including Changi Airport in Singapore and Schipol Airport in the Netherlands. Consultation with the airport stakeholders identified the key issues and informed the creation of the brief, and from this the objectives and identification of the landscape zones were formed.

Concept

The second phase identified opportunities and constraints and through further stakeholder consultation concept options were formed and presented for review to BAC.

Masterplan

The third phase saw the development of the Key Design Intent and the development of precinct layouts for expert panel review and following this developed design was carried out for priority areas in the airport. The precincts within the masterplan are based on the development parcels as identified by BAC, and as such they allow BAC to commence development with a clear idea of the form, and the opportunities and constraints of the landscape in each precinct.

Brisbane Airport is located adjacent to several sites of environmental significance including the internationally recognised Moreton Bay RAMSAR migratory bird site and the BCC habitat of Kedron Brook. With this in mind BAC understands the importance of managing its development to be sympathetic to the wider Moreton Bay environment. The masterplan aids BAC with this by outlining the following objectives:

  • To retain and protect features of landscape value including designated sites, protected species, landscape features, and key views.
  • To establish systems for environmentally responsible landscape planning that can accommodate rapid development.
  • To enhance the compatibility of development and airport land use on the natural systems and landscape.
  • To provide habitat zones for existing native fauna in the Airport Precinct
  • Provide a series of open spaces that are unified in character and quality
  • Plant species selection driven by site requirements: emphasis on endemic/native species that are drought tolerant and can withstand the harsh site conditions, and careful species selection and placement to minimise potential bird strike problems.

The masterplan process has informed BAC of the opportunities present to develop the landscape of the airport in an environmentally sensitive and sustainable manner. BAC has supported the masterplan process at all stages and is committed to following the masterplans recommendations on all future developments. Brisbane Airport is a high profile site, and the outcomes of the masterplan will be on display for all users of the airport. The masterplan aims to guide the development of the airport landscape to create a unique arrival and departure experience indicative of South East Queensland.
