Landscape Architect: Taylor Cullity Lethlean

Lartelare, Wirra Drive, near Causeway Road, Ethelton, South Australia

Introduction

Lartelare is the largest public open space contained within the Newport Quays Stage 1 & 2 Development. The park is pivotal within the development for its significant contribution in acknowledging the cultural history of the site.

Taylor Cullity Lethlean undertook an extensive 12 month consultation process with the local Aboriginal Community over 12 months. This involved site visits, workshops and many one to one and small group discussions to ascertain appropriate stories to be reflected both in the broad park design and the detailed interpretive elements.

The consultation process was devised and led by the landscape architect with support from Port Adelaide and Enfield Council, the Joint venture of Multiplex and Urban Construct and the Land Management Corporation.  The process aimed to;

  • provide valuable and informed input into the design process
  • provide an integrated and enriched design from the broad concept through to  the design detail
  • create a project that the community appreciated, respects and take ownership of

A design was developed that is culturally rich and contains integrated interpretation throughout all design elements including shelters, seating, indigenous planting and contemplative clearings.

The Aboriginal community was actively involved during construction by collecting and making artifacts for display, and as part of an employment program encouraging the Aboriginal community into landscaping through planting of indigenous plants within the park.
