Swanston Walk – Art program in Melbourne
From Landcape Australia 1/1993, p25
The recently unveiled bluestone sculpture `Architectural Fragment',
by Petrus Spronk, has drawn attention in Melbourne to the new public
arts program of the Melbourne City Council.
Situated in the recently
completed Swanston Walk, outside the State Library, Architectural
Fragment is actually the fifth artwork to be completed in Swanston
Walk, though as yet it is the largest.
Other works already completed
are:
- Brass inlay outside Hotel Swanston, by Robert Jacks
- Small bronze dog in the City Square, by Pamela Irvine
- Four plaques outside the Town Hall, being modern interpretations
of the four quarters of Melbourne's coat of arms. These were
designed in-house by Melbourne City Council staff.
- Three tramway stanchions in front of the State Library which
have been decorated by Jennifer McCarthy(These will be re-painted
by an as yet unknown artist in five years' time).
Further works being executed, and for which funding is available
are:
- Four copper weathervanes by Daniel Jenkins to be installed
high above Swanston Walk at the Bourke Street intersection.
- A six-metre-high bronze sculpture, the work of Loretta Quinn,
to be installed outside St Pauls Cathedral
