Landscape Architects: HASSELL
Location: Stokes Hill Wharf Road, Darwin , Northern Territory
In 2005 HASSELL were appointed to prepare the detailed design and documentation of Stage One of the new master planned Darwin Waterfront.
Stage One of the Darwin Waterfront focuses on the provision of generous open parklands with mature shade trees and associated exotic planting for Darwin residents and visitors to enjoy through all of the Territory’s unique dramatic seasons.
The parklands will include the Territory’s first open air wave lagoon, cultural facilities and interpretive public art. The parklands will be supported by a variety of retail and al-fresco drinking and dining opportunities including an apartment hotel, residential apartments and the Darwin Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The vision for the Darwin Waterfront project was to transform the city’s redundant industrial port facility into a world class, mixed use urban community attracting local residents, business travellers and tourists alike. Creating a new harbour front precinct linking the water to the city and revitalising a derelict but historically important part of the city was the challenge for the new Darwin Waterfront development. The development builds upon Darwin’s strong cultural heritage, incorporating the site’s historic headland landforms, re-establishing natural vegetation, and acknowledging indigenous associations and past uses.
The Darwin Waterfront will evolve into a distinctive mixed use entertainment, cultural and waterside residential precinct, which will enhance the desirability of Darwin as a place to live and visit.
Underpinning the success of the development is the Darwin Convention Centre. Collectively, the waterfront development will attract new business and visitors to the city while catering for the needs and aspirations of Darwin residents and Territorians alike.
Stage One will provide the launch pad for the new vision and will provide the momentum to create the first stage of a new community.
