Auckland Central - harbour redevelopments

The large and impressive New Zealand Christmas Trees dotted around the foreshore (which unfortunately are unlikely to be in flower)

Queen Street (half way up), city - Excellent new streetscape

Park opposite new Stadium - Mahuhu Crescent, east end of City

Vulcan lane and other laneways - a bit melbournesque on a small scale

Nuffield Street at Newmarket - Westfield low rise development

Britomart transit precinct in downtown Auckland

Barry Curtis Park (not all complete) but has a great a thematic playground

Myers Park - walk from Karanghape Road through a mall down the park -  excellent experience

Auckland Domain (east of Auckland Uni, containing the Wintergarden complex) near the city leading to the uni - big park with some sculptures.

Ponsonby Road heritage walks - Ponsonby (just west of CBD) + lots of trendy cafes, restaurants.

University Grounds - some interesting stuff

Mission Bay - nice beach promenade

Devonport - catch a ferry across, old town with great traditional sea promenade

Climb all the Volcano Parks, especially Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill

One Tree Hill Domain & Cornwall Park (combined are the largest  parkland in Auckland, historic park aspects etc)

The Museum/War Memorial in the Domain (spectacular location) is excellent and gives a comprehensive kiwi snapshot - level 1 cultural history, level 2 natural history, level 3 war history, with excellent displays

Auckland Zoo

Auckland Waterfront

Auckland Botanic Gardens

Sky Tower (very much the tourist icon, but good views over the city!)

Outskirts:

Waitakere Ranges & Piha Beach - amazing volcanic beaches and mountain ranges around 45min drive from City if anyone has time.  More info can be provided through the National Parks websites etc.

Waiheke Island, approx 20-30 ferry ride from Auckland ferry terminal with scenic Auckland harbour views on the way and return. Plenty of cafes and restaurants for lunch, good village fare, walks etc. Good to fill a morning or afternoon.

Mt Eden (views of and from)

Botany town centre south of akl (need a car) - urban renewal and attempt  to create main street instead of just big box shopping centre response

There is an interesting peninsula about an hour or so's drive north of auckland which is old farmland and they have a mangement plan turning it back to natural forest, run by Department of Conservation

Take a harbour ride on one of the america's cup yachts - worth the $; you get to do grinding and steer the boat too if you want

Matakana about 1-1.5 hours north lovely little village with some recent LA  work

Tamaki Drive - along the foreshore to the east of the city leading to Clevedon

The rural landscapes of Clevedon (to the east of Auckland)

The west coast from Auckland, especially Piha Beach and the Gannet (bird) community at Muriwai - c.1 hour drive.
