Landscape Architect: Vital Places

The Sweetwater DVD (9 minute) was developed primarily as a promotional tool to support actions identified in the “Our Town Our Future” prospectus document. The approach to this media has integrated the concept of “Place Music” with traditional revitalisation project communication.

The Place Music process combined the background research and community consultation insights with the prospectus document as a creative framework for the message structure. Original music and lyrics were inspired by the community vision and the local cultural and environmental history. The combination of these original processes has created a DVD that is an experimental window to the future of authentic place communication in important planning projects.

Place and Communication

Communication has been a fundamental principle in the development of Ingham Revitalisation Strategy. From the beginning of the project there has been a strong appreciation that facilitating the significant change required to turn the place around will require the strong support of the majority of the existing community.

The key direction from the community is that “its time for leadership and action”

Leadership as it has been expressed in the development of a strategy that is open, accountable, listening and action orientated.

It was also realised early in the process that significant funding would be required to deliver the community’s vision and this would require are funding partnership initially with all three levels of government  followed by the private sector.

Show Casing a Sense of Place

The media package developed for the consultation and funding application processes has looked to showcase the depth of community pride and their commitment to envisage and embrace a bold future. A priority of the media package was to provide the public with a framework to input and evaluate the lifestyle and economic impacts proposed by the revitalisation strategy.

The Prospectus document and the Sweetwater DVD embody a triple bottom line message that acknowledges the Shire’s community aspirations within an action planning framework. The Sweetwater DVD has innovatively integrated the concept of “Place Music” with the traditional approach to revitalisation project communication.

The open and honest communication of the project has enabled external agencies to quickly assess and acknowledge the grass roots values of the project.

To date this approach has secured $6million of State Government funding with a further $4 million application to the Federal Government pending.
