Landscape Architect:  VIVO Design

LOCATION: Palm Cove, Cairns

This small scale residential project is an excellent example of a successful collaboration between the architect and landscape architect, resulting in a site responsive, sustainable solution, entirely appropriate to the sub tropical rainforest context.

Key factors of the design include the following:

  • Seamless integration of the home into the natural rainforest surroundings
  • Retention of existing trees previously identified for removal
  • Transplant of existing pandanus species previously identified for removal
  • Successful collaboration with the architects to create a living environment that embraces the subtropical surrounds
  • Use of plant species which blend with the natural environment whilst also answering the clients brief for a lush, textured tropical resort type environment
  • Design and construction of a dry creek bed gully through the home which respected and enhanced the natural overland flow path on the site previously
  • Use of landscape materials which respond to the rainforest gully environment (e.g. stone, local pebble, timber)
  • Use of water features to further enhance living environments and separate living spaces from bedroom quarters
  • Creation of a low maintenance low water use landscape
  • Demonstrating to other purchasers that a sustainable, site responsive home, can also be a high quality, beautifully detailed, rich environment in which to live.
