Introduction
ASPECT Studios, Stutterheim Anderson and Cassandra Complex in 2006 were selected to undertake the design of the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre Shilling Garden and Memorial which surround the Queen Victoria Women’s Trust Centres heritage building, providing a place to reflect upon inspiring women who have made a difference. The intent of the project as put forward by the Women’s Trust was to be designed by women designers and artists for women.
The collaboration and the garden negotiated between heritage issues, access to various levels of the building, a place for the public and an on-going ceremonial wall to celebrate women’s contributions to Victoria on a very small and highly constrained site.
The final design was across three levels; providing access for all to two levels, a new lower access point to the building and a perched courtyard.
The glass walls are inscribed with names of incredible women, celebrating their roles as mothers, grandmothers, sisters, friends, colleagues and community contributors.
The design contextually negotiates between the history of the original heritage building and the new urban spaces of the surrounding QV centre and Lonsdale Street streetscape.
