Introduction
Tract consultants engaged by Knox to prepare master plan for an integrated residential and parkland development. The brief calls for innovation and integration of social, economic and environmental issues.
Stamford Park provides an excellent Case Study and model for holist planning and sustainable practice in integrated water management, visual, environmental and community and cultural planning and design.
- Historic interpretation of Homestead and history
- Wetlands for habitat, education, water quality treatment, aquifer recharge, floodplain.
Stamford Park is a 52 Ha site adjacent to Corhanwarrabul Creek in Rowville. The site is of regional bio-significance and of high cultural interest. Core components:
- 7.2 ha residential housing 80-150 dwelling units with a central community open space designed on best practice environmental and social principles
- Parkland including wetlands for habitat, stormwater retention, water quality treatment, irrigation, recreation, aquifer rechargewater
- Heritage Homestead and Gardens
- Historic interpretation precinct for indigenous heritage, post European settlement, environment and culture.
- Cultural and Recreational facility
Innovative Approaches
Our approach has been, along with conventional and proven best practice in urban design and landscape architecture, to adopt an ecological systems approach to planning and design. The master plan incorporates our ‘systems’ approach to water management, vegetation, economic, community and cultural components.
Integration of new housing types is driven by landscape aspirations which are focused on both the marketable amenity benefits of the public realm and opportunities for interaction and engagement that the landscape will provide to existing residents and the future community. The project presents an opportunity for Knox City Council to demonstrate community integration, water and waste management, affordable housing initiatives and provision of new housing modes not previously readily available in the municipality. The master plan also boasts innovation in Vegetation rehabilitation and ‘soft’ engineering. The use of indigenous planting within the residential fabric is integrated within the parkland context.
Lessons learned: The need to ensure landscape values are clearly measured and articulated in social and economic terms.
