HASSELL

Location:  Burswood, WA

HASSELL is the Town Landscape Architect for the integrated urban village adjacent the Burswood Resort overlooking the Swan River and the city of Perth. This significant urban village will house over 3000 residents in a variety of housing types, including single housing, apartments, and terrace accommodation.

The Peninsula is part of a vision to create a series of high quality, environmentally sensitive urban villages overlaid on the metropolitan area, centred on transport nodes linked to Perth’s central area where walking and cycling are a natural way of moving about.  As a planned and designed environment the Peninsula will cater for the needs and expectations of future residents within the Peninsula Community.

HASSELL is responsible for the design and delivery of the entire public realm infrastructure including the design of each residential housing landscape, public open space, plazas, streetscapes, mixed use private / public space, artwork, water treatment irrigation lakes and pedestrian networks.

The landscape strategies are part of wider planning initiatives to create a comfortable, attractive and sustainable urban living environment which enhances the local recreational, social and natural context. The public spaces and landscape settings range from an ‘urban character’ plaza, to ‘backyard bbq’ and ‘kickabout’ parks, and a central Lakeland Park which integrates irrigation water collection, storage, natural treatment and recycling functions within a high visual amenity landscape setting.

Such diversity of precincts within one project has demanded careful consideration and application of materials to create an aesthetic language that complements the architectural character while providing unique functional spaces that draw on the historic and natural aspects of the site.

Environmental Objectives

The former cement works site represented a barren ecological landscape on which thriving communities of 3000 people were eventually going to call ‘home’.  As the Town Landscape Architect, HASSELL were tasked with developing a series of interconnected parkland spaces that formed the backbone to this residential community.

Formulating and implementing the largest tree transplanting project of its time in Perth, HASSELL was able to recycle mature trees destined for demolition and use them in all proposed streets and parkland settings.  Coupled with an overall site water balance the development achieves significant reductions in water consumption in both the residential dwellings and public open spaces.

The Peninsula has been developed to ensure longevity and material selection have been instrumental in lifecycle assessments.  All public realm spaces have been reviewed not only by Mirvac but by the Town of Victoria Park who utlise the expertise of practicing professionals to conduct design reviews on all developments.

The quality and finish of works meet strict environmental criteria established during the structure planning phase of the development.
