President's Message

Welcome to QLDMark from the new executive team! I am honored and delighted for the nomination as new State President, and thank you to all those present at the Annual General Meeting for your trust and support in my nomination.
I am anxious of the challenges which will be required from my new role as State President, but am also confident in the support of our members to make sure that we make it through with flying colours…. I would like to express my thanks and congratulations to Chris Boulton for her skills and enthusiasm in the role, which has placed the Queensland group in such an enviable position of strength. I will endeavour to continue Chris’ efforts to make sure that the executive team remains relevant to the aspirations of all members, foster relationships with allied professions, organisations and sponsors, and make myself available to listen to your comments and suggestions.
Recent events throughout the state have demonstrated the diversity of the profession, and have proved great successes. These ranged from workshops on play environments on the Sunshine Coast, morning surf discussions on the Gold Coast, investigations on the use of local plants in Far North Queensland, as well as a Lead Breakfast and Urban Design discussion in Brisbane. Feedback from the sessions is always welcome, as are ideas for future events. Please communicate these to myself or the Executive for discussion and inclusion in the events calendar.
The AILA Queensland Awards will provide a highlight for the two-year cycle, with the awards ceremony and dinner being held on Friday 18th September at Gianni’s Portside, Hamilton. This year, an additional forum will provide an opportunity to gain familiarity with all entries as well as socialise: an Awards Launch event will take place at King George Square Busway Station, Adelaide Street, on Wednesday 29th July 2009. The entries will be displayed to the general public in the Busway Station for three days after the launch, and comments invited and integrated into a ‘people’s choice’ category. The entries will subsequently travel to each of our Regional Groups for display in public spaces. A great publicity opportunity for the profession and our sponsors.
Opportunities for Continued Professional Development will continue and be updated in the calendar on the AILA website. Next in Brisbane will be a Lead Breakfast on 16th July and an Explore Event visit of the Southbank Tafe on Thursday 20th August to gain insight into the design challenges behind one of the showcase urban landscapes recently constructed in Brisbane.
I look forward to meeting with you at our upcoming events, individually or exchanging comments by e-mail. I will endeavour to visit each of our regional groups before the end of the year. And get ready for the awards!
Cheers,
Jean.

The AILA QLD State Awards
The AILA QLD State Awards are right around the corner & everyone is invited.
This year there has been a very enthusiastic committee who endeavor to unveil an awards night like no other!
In order to give the awards night the true hype it deserves we have decided to host not one but two events in honor of the hard work & creative talents that QLD Landscape Architects bring to these awards.
We have introduced a new element to the ‘Awards Night’ and that is the ‘Awards Launch’. This new event focuses on unveiling the AILA QLD State Awards submissions to not just our fellow peers priorto the awards night, but to the general public as well.
We are using the Awards Launch as a way of putting Landscape Architecture on the map in terms of exposing our industry to the public through the 2009 QLD State Award submission. This event will be launched in Brisbane and will make its way around QLD, where the submissions will continue to be on display for the public.
The Awards Night itself will be a formal event and a forum to show our support to our fellow colleagues and indulge in a night full of fine dining and awards announcements.
Without the support of our Awards Partners and all the entries; these two events wouldn’t be possible and certainly wouldn’t be as spectacular as they are.
Proposed jury panel:
- Gini Lee - QUT,
- Malcolm Snow - South Bank Corporation,
- Damian Dewer - Brisbane City Council,
- Robert Prestipino - Vital Places,
- Darren Mew - Stocklands
- Katharina Nieberler-Walker - Conrad Gargett Architecture.
Book these dates into your calendar (times to be confirmed) as you don’t want to miss out on the 2009 AILA QLD State Awards.
The 2009 Launch Event: will be held at King George Square’s Bus Terminal on the 29th July 2009 and is inviting everyone to come and view the submissions for the 2009 AILA QLD State Awards.
This event will be launched in Brisbane and the submissions displayed for 3 days, in which it will then make its way around QLD, where the submissions will continue to be on display for the public.
The 2009 Awards Night: will be held at Gianni’s, Portside on the 18th September 2009.

LOCAL PLANTS AND PRODUCTS - 14 May, 2009
The ‘Seven Deadly Sins of Timber’ and ‘Townsville Native Plant Species were the two topics presented at the FNQ AILA event held in the Mayoral Reception Room at Townsville City Council. These workshops were designed specifically for Landscape Architects and their staff, Designers, and Environmental Consultants.
Workshop Number 1 – ‘7 Deadly Sins of Timber’ – was presented by Ted Stubbersfield from Outdoor Furniture (Brisbane). Ted gave a very informative presentation regarding recent changes to Australian Standards for Timber, and how to use timber correctly in the landscape.
Workshop Number 2 – ‘Townsville Native Plant Species’ was presented by Phil Murray from Greening Australia (Townsville). Phil gave an insight into the latest trends of native planting in the landscape, and a brief run down on what species are suitable for dry and wet conditions in Townsville.
AILA FNQ would like to thank both speakers and all those that helped to organise the event.
For those of you that are interested, Phil Murrays presentation can be viewed on the AILA website.
If you would like any material from Ted Stubbersfields presentation regarding timber, please contact Ted at email: rea3316@ipcomz.com.au
We look forward to our next event to be held on the 30th July. Please refer to the events page on AILA’s website for further details.

AILA Gold
Gerard McCormick
AILA Gold Surf
While numbers have waned slightly with weather cooling down, the AILA Gold group continues to attract regulars to the AILA Gold Surfing series on the Gold Coast. The concept of meeting for a surf was proposed for 2009 to establish common ground in the AILA Gold group and network with members and non-members.
We faced a 3 foot swell at the March meeting at Main Beach, slightly bumpy due to a strengthening south-east wind, but still delivering a few waves on the outside bank. The need for mobile phone numbers and RSVPs was discussed as a way of adjusting meeting locations at the last minute to tap into better surf conditions based on wind, tide and swell. The toughening market and reductions in workload is also a common thread in discussions. However an undercurrent of optimism remains in the group.
With few expectations, a core group of diehards from S.P.L.A.T. and T.H.G. had the best waves of the year at Burleigh with an unexpected 3 foot swell pulse delivering clean, uncrowded waves at the Cove and reeling through the Point. Wave of the day went to David Curtis who took off on a set through the cove and was deep in the tube on his backhand before being skittled. This session showed the networking opportunities in the surf with Michael Manning from Carlson Software Australia and Councilor Greg Betts sharing the surf.
The final two surfs for the year are planned on 27th May at the Spit (meet at the Sand pumping Jetty) and the final surf on 24th June at the Alley. As the mornings are getting cooler and the days shorter it is less appealing to get up for a surf, but we encourage all to attend. A morning surf is a great way to start the day, sun rising over the water and great natural features like Burleigh Headland in the background make it almost enjoyable to go to work.

June Event
Two for Two
On the 17th of June, Complete Landscape Architects at Varsity Lakes will be hosting a Two for Two night at their offices at Varsity Lakes. Two for two is a Design Dialogue Session with finger food and beverages to get our minds running. Two for two requires participants to talk for 2 minutes about a topic of interest and field 2 minutes worth of questions from the floor, on any topic.
Purpose:
Two for two allows landscape architects and other design professionals to see snapshots of what each other are working on or are interested in. It gives us an opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and build a collaborative and critique culture of design within AILA Gold.
Please email a couple of powerpoint slides of a topic you wish to present or bring along an image or idea. We are going to need about 10 presenters for the session - get in fast - any topic is valid.
Call or email peter_matthews@completeurban.com.au (0424 182 7010) for more details.
September Event
AILA Gold is seeking expressions of interest and potential sponsorship for the September event proposed for 16th September 2009. One of the ideas thrown around is Ecological Restoration on the Gold Coast.

National Climate Change Project Consultation
AILA BRISBANE - Jean Rousseaux
Discuss – Urban Renewal on the Brisbane River Waterfront - 7 April 2009
The Brisbane River is at the core of Brisbane’s history, development and sense of place. This importance certainly contributed to the success of the first Discuss event organised by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architectural with a focus on Urban Design issues: Urban Design along the Brisbane River.
More than 30 professionals, including planners and arboriculturists as well as landscape architects, gathered to hear about innovative approaches conceived, planned or being delivered along the Brisbane River waterfront.
Kevin Hayes (principal, Kevin Hayes Architects) opened the event with a proposal to re-unite William Street with the Brisbane River. His plan is to capitalise on the role played by this part of town as an arrival point from Victoria Bridge, as well as an elevated bank suitable for early white settlement. His idea is for the removal of the two freeway ramps leading to Elizabeth Street and visually as well as physically separating the Treasury building and State Library from the River. These would be replaced by a landscaped urban plaza which would span above the lower lanes of the freeway, and provide a terraced edge down to the City Cat terminal. The project would also include integrated public transport connections underground. The debate on alternative ways to revive North Bank is alive and well!
David Cunningham (project manager, Urban Land Development Authority) provided an insight in how masterplanning contributes to giving shape to big ideas for urban renewal. The North Shore Hamilton project will reshape not only activity along the Brisbane River, but also affect and connect with the existing urban environment beyond Kingsford Smith Drive. The project for mixed use development is dependent on the provision of a quality built environment, including open space, as well as extension of existing public transport to cater for the precinct, and the careful staging of land release as well as the progressive departure of existing noxious industry to new premises.
Mandy Rounsefell (Project Landscape Architect, Conics) focused on the detailed design approach used in the development of North Shore park at Hamilton to translate the history and significance of the site over time in the new context of the North Shore precinct.
A very close liaison with the project management team and local artists contributed to overcome many challenges in the development of a unique park in Brisbane, complete with a café, play sculptures, and a new beach where the naturally occurring sand is heavily used by all.

National Council Update
It was an impressive baton handover – without missing a step – from Chris Boulton’s departing Queensland executive to the new team. There I was thinking that Chris’s presidency will be a hard act to follow, with some great and long lasting achievements, but to then see the enthusiasm of our new State executive and note the ongoing and committed endorsement of our growing list of sponsors is hugely encouraging.
Thanks Chris for leading the team to this point, and welcome to the new executive.
The challenge is on for the AILA to host a successful national conference in Brisbane after the outstanding success of the recent national conference in Melbourne in May. Our executive director is working on some interesting initiatives in this area for 2011: more soon from the National Office.
In the meantime we have our national one-day conference in Perth on 21st September this year, preceded by the next National Council meeting and national AGM on Sunday 20th September: come celebrate international day of peace in the west!
Don’t overlook the recent big announcement: The Australian Gallery of Design. A partnership between AILA and the university of Canberra, the National Museum and the AIA. Our first exhibition has opened.
Also, the AILA has been represented nationally with other partners in the formation of the Australian Design Coalition. Key objectives are currently being identified. The AILA National Representative on this is our own Professor Gini Lee.
The AILA is having increasing success in our advocacy activities and in seeking new partnerships in a number of areas. Two recent actions are:
-
CHASS: Council of the Humanities, Arts and Social Science. The AILA has applied to join this Council and recently attended a workshop and presentations on Design and Research in Canberra.
-
DRI : Design research Institute: Members of National Council and National Office met with members of the DRI in Melbourne to explore future relationships.
As you will be aware, our National Climate Change for the Professions Project has led to the development of the Landscape Principles which were used as a basis for the national conference. The next stage is to use the principles to influence the education policy and to underpin a program of CPD: and of course to frame debate in all our activities. Key dates ahead are: Stage Two: 2009 – 2010 – to develop CPD units; Stage Three: 2010 – 2011 – delivery of CPD.
In other areas of National Council Policy Development, the following is underway:
- Urban Design Policy: Being developed with BEDP and other partners in conjunction with Innovation Council and Infrastructure Australia. AILA Executive Director /AILA as leader for this initiative.
- Carbon Free Environment. (planned)
- Green Infrastructure policy: a draft is being prepared by Catherine Neilson.
- National Registration Policy: Drafted by AILA Executive Director for BEDP consideration.
- AILA Research Policy. (planned)
- AILA Education – Accreditation Standards Policy – currently being reviewed.
Regarding Education, our Accreditation Standards Review has completed the first round of consultations on the 28 May 2009. Some issues were identified and matters still to be clarified: we may look at a recent graduate survey following several key comments received as part of the consultations. A report and recommendations is being readied for National Council consideration.
Finally, nationally there are now some 1,300 members on our database, with we hope to welcome quite a few new members joining us soon in our own State.

AILA SUN – Greg Thomas

Sunshine Coast Landscape Architects making a mark on the Regions Public Spaces
A focus on public space regeneration and improvement is recently being experienced on the Sunshine Coast. Spearheaded by the recently amalgamated Sunshine Coast Regional Council’s (SCRC) Landscape and Urban Design Unit, has seen the recent completion of spaces such as Cornmeal Parade and a section of the Mooloolaba foreshore park.
Cornmeal Parade adjoining Cornmeal Creek is a public walkway that links the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre to the Esplanade, Cotton Tree. Quality surface finishes, sculptural seating walls and colourful feature lighting totems provides an interesting arrangement of the linear space. The obligatory WSUD swales and basins have also been included in the design.
Mooloolaba Foreshore includes upgraded children’s play equipment, picnic areas, pathways and beach access adjacent to the Mooloolaba Surf Club. PLACE Design Group’s design and documentation included the retention of existing trees providing instant shade to the upgraded seating and barbeque facilities together with the sea breezes means the space is extensively used.
Another recently completed work is the upgrading to the renowned Hasting Street in Noosa. Urban designers Architectus, assisted by Gamble McKinnon Green on planting works, recently received a RAIA Regional Commendation Award for this project. The replacement of pedestrian pavements with stone and coloured concrete that also incorporates sandblasted patterning has unified the street creating an individual identity that is reinforced with the unique street furniture.
The list of recently improved public spaces is soon to be expanded as other projects including Nambour Town Centre and Bulcock Beach Esplanade (Caloundra) are currently under construction.
Place Design Group has assisted SCRC in the design and documentation of the Bulcock Beach Esplanade. When complete the foreshore will incorporate an enlarged boardwalk, improved beach access and picnic facilities, public artworks and custom furniture, in total costing in the region of 8 million dollars.
Another first for the Sunshine Coast is the nearly completed commercial office complex ‘The Edge’ which is the first Certified Green Star Project on the Sunshine Coast. Having the advantage of being located on the shores of Lake Kawana with a north facing aspect, it achieves benchmark levels in providing natural daylight to large areas of the interior of the building.
Developed by RGD Property Group with the landscape designed by their in-house Landscape Architects, the extensive landscaped area uses drought tolerant species and irrigation water harvested from the roof of the two buildings. Substantial bicycle facilities have also been provided making cycling to work an attractive option and taking full advantage of the pedestrian/cyclist link from the site, to the lake and key north-south coastal cycle routes.
Landscape Architect for RDG, Tracey Carbis said ‘This project provides a benchmark towards a more sustainable future and the community with a tangible local product. ‘The Edge’ is a timely and important step forward for the Sunshine Coast development industry.’
This will also go down well with the SCRC whose aim is to be Australia’s most sustainable region.
So next time you’re visiting the Sunshine Coast spare a moment to visit one or two of the exciting projects designed by one of your Sunshine Coast colleagues.

Pacific Trees Winter Update - Christina Gnezdiloff
Winter! For many of us, that means pulling the doona up a little higher and pressing the snooze button just one more time. But not so at Pacific Trees. This winter we are looking forward to delivering a large contract project we have had growing for the last 18 months with the Central Highlands Regional Council.
This project has been a major part of our move towards being Queenslands number 1 advanced tree wholesale nursery and has showcased how Landscape Architects, clients and nurseries can work together to bring the best outcome for all stakeholders. We look forward to sharing the delivery and planting with you via our website. www.pacifictrees.com.au
Root-pruning has been completed on all Ex Ground stock, this ensures that any Ex Ground trees delivered to your site from Pacific Trees will loose minimal leaves in the transplanting process. Root-pruning also ensures Pacific Trees is moving towards full NATSPEC compliance across all product lines. If you would like more information on how we intend on achieving this compliance, take a look at our website www.pacifictrees.com.au and click on the “Product Trials” button. This will take you to pot trials we are conducting, to ensure that all starter stock we use will be NATSPEC compliant.
Don’t forget that we are also in the process of visiting Landscape Architecture offices where we discuss the benefits of good root stock in detail. Some firms are using our presentation to contribute towards CPD points. If you would like more info or would like to make a time, don’t hesitate to contact us.
