State President's Report       Andrea Ryan

Hello and welcome to this Christmas edition of QLD Mark.

I would like to start by thanking everyone who has contributed to AILA QLD this year. We are a small group professionally and to perform so many State roles successfully is a fantastic achievement for the profession.  Both State awards, National conference, our monthly CPD program of events, graduate awards and events, RLA interviews and workshops, policy review, media releases, partnering with allied professions and government agencies, and general advocacy of the profession are but a few of the key tasks that AILA QLD delivered on both in a metro and regional capacity this year.

I am very aware that this is solely contributable to all of the passionate and enthusiastic, members and sponsors that we have here in QLD. So a big thank you to all those people who assisted us this year.  In particular I would like to mention our valued State Partners Eureka, Plant UP, Greenstock, Urbanstone, Urban Play, Kompan and Nuturf

For those of you who are keen to be involved in 2012 now is the time. Early in the New Year we will be forming the 2012/13 calendar of events for both metro and regional. If there is a topic that you would be interested in hearing about, speaking about or if you are aware of a visiting speaker please contact Katie with the details. There is always plenty of opportunity to be involved no matter what level of your career you are at.

2012 is sure to be a big year but for now it is time to drag yourself away from your computers, mobiles and site boots and have a relaxing Christmas and New Years.

Wishing you and your family a safe and joyful time during this silly season. See you in 2012!

Cheers
Andrea

AILA  Brisbane – Radmilla Zaimovic

The AILA National Council awarded AILA Fellowships to Malcolm Snow & Stephen White for their contribution to the industry. Both the latest Fellows started their distinguished carriers in Queensland. While Malcolm is departing to Melbourne, Stephen is continuing his carrier in Queensland

The AILA Queensland Executive organized a cocktail party to celebrate Malcolm’s and Stephens fellowship. Fellowship medals were presented to the recipients by National Councilor Katharina Nieberler-Walker. Both participants expressed their appreciation of this distinguished title by promising even harder work in promoting Landscape Architecture.

The event was covered in the media including The Courier Mail:
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture's (AILA) National Council this week awarded a large gong, a Fellowship, to CEO of South Bank Corporation, Malcolm Snow.
The fellowship is awarded in recognition of his 25 years of national leadership in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Place Management.

What a wonderful way to celebrate a quarter of a century in landscape industry for two new AILA Fellows and also getting attention for a first time in the local media.

AILA QLD Explore Robelle Domain Parklands – Luke Micali

The latest AILA QLD Explore event was held on the 20th of October 2011 and involved a field trip to the recently opened Robelle Domain Parklands at Springfield.

A small group of industry professionals was lead around the park on a walking tour, the first stop was the playground, where we were given a hands on demonstration of key elements through the playground by Ben Urban.

Luke Micali then continued by taking the group on an informal tour through the park highlighting the key design elements of the site, which included retaining extensive numbers of mature eucalypts through the general parkland, waterfall and a tree top walk showing panoramic views of the park.

The afternoon was filled with back and forth discussion about design constraints and solutions that arouse from inception of the project through to completion, plus future extensions planned for the parkland.

Thanks to everyone that attended the day at Robelle Domain. It turned out to be an informative and enjoyable day.

“Reconstructing Parks in Flood Prone Areas – Is it a Good Idea?” - Penny Spiers

In November, the AILA Qld in collaboration with the Better Parks Alliance hosted the third Parks Forum.

Guest speakers were Chris Boulton (Parks Manager, Logan City Council) who discussed “The Reality of Managing Parks in Flood Prone Areas”, Shaun Walsh (Design Manager, PLACE Design Group) who presented a “Case Study of Fitzgibbon Chase Parklands: A Local Park Designed for Inundation” and a joint presentation from Frances Hudson and Kerri Heilbronn (Senior Parks Planners, Brisbane City Council) who talked about the ongoing “Flood Recovery of Brisbane's Parks”.

The event was very well attended and raised some important issues about planning and designing for parks in flood prone areas.  AILA Qld would like to thank the Better Parks Alliance for supporting the ongoing Parks Forum series and looks forward to future collaborations in 2012.

AILA FNQ – Renee Jezard (PHOTO’s 8-10)
AILA FNQ  XMAS PARTY

The AILA FNQ Christmas Party was held at one of Townsville’s most exclusive special event restaurant’s – A Touch of Salt (Friday the 9th December), and was generously sponsored by JMAC Constructions and Naturform.

The evening kicked off with an ‘Ugly Christmas Shirt’ Contest.  The winner, Tim Connor from RPS, created a garish green shirt adorned with tinsel and baubles.

Following a scrumptious Al-A-Carte Christmas dinner, guests played a game called, ‘Unwrap the Present’.  The idea of this game was to unwrap the present wearing Christmas mittens, a Christmas bowtie and elf hat, before the next person rolled a double with the dice, and started the process over again.  Christian Pearce from Lend lease successfully unwrapped the present, and won two movie ticket vouchers!

Thank you to all our AILA members and allied professionals for getting into the Christmas spirit with their fanciful shirt creations.  As we continue to grow as a chapter, please know the partnerships with our sponsors, Greg LeBrocque (JMAC Constructions) and Barry Heffer (Naturform) are vital to the success of AILA FNQ.  We truly appreciate their support.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for 2012 from the AILA FNQ Crew!

Next Event:  Green Walls / Nursery Visit – February 2012 – stay tuned for more details!

AILA SUN – Carl Safstrom

Bulcock Beach Foreshore put on all her charm for a sunny morning breakfast presentation and site walk beside the sparkling waters of the Pumistone Passage in Caloundra on the 25th of November.

Sunshine Coast Landscape Architects were given an update from Jamie Franklin from Council’s Place Design Standards Unit on the approach Council is adopting towards Place Making on the Sunshine Coast.  This includes adaption of a Place Making Charter and a holistic approach across Council to ensure that maximum social, economic and cultural benefit can be leveraged from Council Capital Works projects.

Two recently completed projects were then visited (Bulcock Beach Foreshore Redevelopment and Bulcock Street Stage 1 Redevelopment) which provide an example of how landscape projects can benefit the functionality, amenity, social interaction and economy of an area.

Surya Graff from Street and Garden Furniture described the design and development of the street furniture which is integral to the overall aesthetic of the Foreshore redevelopment and Ben Stevens from PLACE Design Group walked the group through the design and construction process highlighting the significant design features and successes of this project.

Allison Eshelby from Sunshine Coast Council then talked to the group at the recently completed Stage 1 of Bulcock Street showcasing the finished work and describing the design rational and construction process.

Our thanks to all of the speakers and to Street and Garden Furniture for sponsoring the event and providing us with breakfast.

Greenstock Nurseries - Helen Protheroe

Airport Link Greenwall
The Airport Link Tunnel will take on a whole new lease of life, when 308 Greenwall Panels are installed over the coming weeks.

The project, designed by RPS Group and overseen by Senior Architect Craig Lovering and developed by Theiss John Holland, will be the largest project of its kind in Queensland.

Greenstock Nurseries have been growing the 308 Greenwall panels for the Airport Link Tunnel, which is scheduled to open in mid 2012. On installation, this living greenwall, will cover an area of 900m2, spanning 155m along both sides of the tunnel. The panels have been grown facing the same orientation as they will be placed in the tunnel. The southern side panels will grow in full sun and the northern side in shade.  A state-of-the-art irrigation system has been designed and installed to keep the plants maintained. The greenwall panels have been designed to last for 40 years.

After extensive research and consultation between Plant Designer Arno King, and Greenstock Nurseries, 67 different plant species were sourced.  A total of 17,222 plants, reflecting Queensland’s subtropical climate, were propagated specifically for the project.  Planting of the greenwalls commenced at Greenstock Nurseries, Griffin site, in March 2011, and planting took two months to complete.

For further information on this project, or for planting or greenwall advice, please contact Greenstock Nurseries on 07 3204 4522.

Greenstock Nurseries would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2012.
