Terms of the Award
The Rodney Owen Beames Memorial Award will be judged annually by the South Australian Group of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA SA) and HASSELL. The prize is awarded to a final project student in either the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture or Master of Landscape Architecture programme at the University of Adelaide.
The Award is an AILA SA initiative directed towards the debate of the place of art in contemporary landscape architecture within Australia. The Award is to be presented to a successful candidate in recognition of their studies in this sector as part of their education in the above programmes at the University of Adelaide.
Timing
The Award will be judged annually, unless there are extraordinary circumstances. It is intended that the Award will be assessed during November each year with specific assessment dates to be finalised by the assessment panel.
The assessment panel should comprise three members:
- One member, the President or President's nominee, who should be Chair of the assessing panel. The Chair will be a corporate member of AILA, excluding University of Adelaide staff members.
- One member who is conversant with the public art realm.
- One Registered Landscape Architect from HASSELL.
- A representative of the academic staff of the University of Adelaide may attend as an observer
Briefing
The assessment panel will be briefed with all relevant material relating to the assessment of the Award prior to the meeting with students. Criteria for assessment should be based on the guidelines.
Ratification
The Chair will notify the AILA SA Executive of the decision of the assessment panel.
Timing of Decision
The assessment panel will form a decision as quickly as possible.
Eligibility
Full and part-time Final Year students who are permanent residents of Australia, who are enrolled in either LARCH 5032 Landscape Architecture Project or LARCH 7020 Landscape Architecture Project (M) courses of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture respectively of the University of Adelaide are eligible for the Award.
Award Administration
AILA SA Group will administer the Award and be responsible for arrangements for student membership to AILA and the preparation and presentation of a certificate.
The Submission
The selection process shall involve a student presentation at a venue to be advised.
Assessment Presentation
A professionally presented final project topic summary and statement should be presented by each candidate. This should include, but not be limited to:
- Philosophy: Personal philosophy of the candidate regarding the contribution of contemporary landscape architecture as art of the environment.
- Project Explanation/Summary: Contextual explanation of the project, its terms of reference and site considerations.
- Design Statement: Design philosophy statement explaining the nature and theory of the design in relation to its creative qualities.
Basis of Selection of Candidates
Assessors will review the material presented as outlined in 8.1. Assessment will be based on this review and not, to every extent possible, based on panel members' prior knowledge of the candidate and their work.
The criteria for assessment emphasises:
- merit of the design philosophy contained in the project;
- successful demonstration of the development of contemporary landscape architecture using art and science as a component of the design.
- rigour and excellence of design resolution in the project, and its articulation in the presentation.
Assessment Process
The assessment panel will meet before the presentation to clarify a common understanding of the assessment criteria, the assessment programme and procedures and the assessment rating process. The panel will assess the candidates with regard to all the assessment criteria. The panel may discuss the candidate's presentation on its conclusion. However, discussion or joint assessment, based on comparative judgements between candidates, should not occur until all candidates have completed their presentations.

The monetary value of the Award will be determined by the AILA SA Group each year, prior to the briefing of Award participants, however, will comprise a minimum of $500 plus the value of the HASSELL contribution (currently $500). The Award includes the following:
