Presidents Letter |

The State Group Executive has been continuing its regular meetings to discuss issues including the 2002 Conference and what has been a reasonably busy program of State Group events. In particular, my thanks go to Paul Harding, Paul Herzich and other members who helped to organise the event at Blumensteins (rapidly becoming the State Group headquarters) for Paul Costigan, the Institute's new Executive Director. It was good to see the commitment by the National Office to meet the local group and listen to their concerns and likewise to have had such an enthusiastic turn out from SA members. The 2002 Conference planning is going particularly well under the guidance of Ray Sweeting assisted by the Conference organiser Jackie Thompson and the Conference Committee. The SA Group is organising the conference in conjunction with the NT Group who are managing the logistics on-site. I think that the conference will be a very important event for the Institute and thank local members for their support in organising the event to date. Dont forget the AGM this Friday evening at Blumensteins. I encourage as many as possible to attend. To be honest (!) I have enjoyed my term as President and thank the State Group Executive and members who have contributed so much to the successful functioning of the group in this State. In particular, it is great to see participation by graduates and students as they are so important in ensuring that the Institute continues to be relevant and contemporary.

National Council Elections |
Voting for members in National Council election
| The current 2 year term of National Council will be completed in October. Members are encouraged to participate in the elections by voting. National Councillors are elected to represent the membership as a whole rather than their particular State or Territory Group, but it is important that they are able to consider the particular needs of State Group members and to provide timely feedback to local members. | ||

The National Executive met by teleconference this week. Some of the issues discussed were: IFLA - I was elected Secretary-General for the Eastern Region at the meeting in Singapore in June. Di Menzies from New Zealand was elected IFLA Secretary-General which gives our region a strong presence in the organisation. BDP - I will be attending the next national meeting of BDP in Brisbane next week. If there are any local issues, I can raise them then. I have a copy of the agenda papers if anyone is interested. National Office - The Institute's new Executive Director, Paul Costigan, has settled in and is making progress on improving communications with State and Territory Groups via a new data base. If members have queries he can be contacted on 02 6 248 9970. Landmark - The next edition of Landmark is programmed for early September. If local members have contributions please contact Paul Costigan. National Council has decided to remain with the 'large' format at least until the end of the year. Survey of Members - The ACT is collating the results of the national survey on members. We hope to report the results in the September Landmark. Education - Following the Australian Educators in Landscape
Architecture (AELA) meeting in Melbourne, Catherin Bull has written to
AILA with suggestions on improving the proposed revision to the existing
AILA Education Policy and Accreditation Procedures. The initial drafts of
these documents were based on input from State and Territory Groups,
Accreditation Panels and the landscape architecture programs. We hope to
revise the documents for approval at the October Council
meeting. | ||
