---------- Australian Institute of Landscape Architects SA Group ----------

President's Message
Graeme Hopkins

Since becoming president last year there has been a series of events and activities that has galvanised the SA Group into an active organization in the professional design world.
The awards night was a great success and many thanks must go to the committee members responsible. Cooperation between a number of organizations and sponsors has followed on from this event.

The mentor program has been put together by Greg Cater with the cooperation of the University of Adelaide and student AILA members. By all accounts this is progressing soundly. This is an initiative of the SA Group and has encouraged a larger than normal student membership. A comprehensive CPD program has been developed this year for our members and has attracted interest from other organizations and their members.
We are planning joint events with other institutes for next year.

The SA Group has put a comprehensive written submission to the University of Adelaide school review of the landscape course, and Gini Lee and I gave a presentation to the review panel. Many thanks to all members who contributed.

For Water Week last year the SA Group developed a number of A1 boards showing cutting edge solutions by LA's and these were displayed at various venues.

The committees have been active, with the Education Committee meeting regularly and involving student members in the process (see Gini's report). They also ran an Education Forum which was a forerunner to many around the nation. Hilary will report further on this.

The Environment Committee has been resurrected by Paul Hertzich and he would welcome any support. Registered LAs have formed a group in SA to promote and foster the registration of Landscape Architects. The SA Group has the benefit of having 2 National Council representatives and this gives SA a good profile in the national organization, so if you have any issues to be raised see Debbie or Hilary.

The SA Group has sponsored a couple of events this year, which has raised AILA's profile. One was the sponsorship of the Match creative discipline collaborative tournament, for which we gained a high profile in the design world. The second sponsorship was in supporting the catalogue for the art exhibition 'Intimate Topographies' at the Hahndorf Academy. This exhibition will tour to Port Pirie and Whyalla where AILA is invited to join in floor talks at the exhibition. This is an opportunity to promote AILA in the regions.
The third sponsorship for a SILVER SPONSOR for the Final year Architecture and Landscape Architecture students exhibition in Nov. 2004 The coming year One of the artists from the Intimate Topographies exhibition Ken Orchard has offered to be involved in the 2005 CPD program, to explore the different perceptions of landscape between artists and landscape architects.

The SA Group is looking to develop a small works contract for works up to $100,000, hopefully as a joint project with the Landscape Contractors Association. So, next year please join a committee to be involved in this exciting period of development for the SA Group.

AILA SA AGM
Education Committee Report

AILA Education Committee Report to state AGM : August 27th 2004

Over the past year the Education Committee has been primarily concerned with discussions on the state of landscape architecture education in South Australia, the issue of student mentoring and the unmet needs of the profession for landscape architecture graduates. These discussions are taking place within a wider national debate being undertaken by the various state AILA committees and educational institutions.

The committee has been interested to review the graduate outcomes of the double degree at Adelaide University, program leadership and with seeking improved staff levels of people qualified in landscape architecture for the program.

We have planned to initiate a series of forums with educators, professionals and students to review current undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and seek feedback from the profession as to their concerns and aspirations for landscape education. The first forum was held in February, where we were briefed by Paul Costigan on similar discussions occurring in NSW, included very broad ranging views on:

• the nature of landscape architecture as a profession;
• the visibility of landscape architecture as a profession
• where do people wanting a career in landscape architecture come from;
• the qualities a graduate needs to work in a variety of arenas, and;
• the desperate need for graduates in this state.

It was suggested that a future forum could focus on what the profession could do for landscape architecture education in South Australia

Women Connecting for Change

Women Connecting for Change is a group of Adelaide women committed to making a difference by sharing resources that will enable women in developing countries like India, to better support their families and communities. The Group has organised a series of fundraising events to raise money for rural women in India.

The Rural Women in India Income Generating Project is a collaborative partnership with The Depressed People's Welfare Association (DPWA), a non government organization in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. The DPWA runs a range of programs including schools, orphanages, programs for people with disabilities, health services, women's' support groups and housing development.
The DPWA women's self-help groups have already identified the following projects for which they would like our assistance in raising funds:

A Provisional store selling goods such as oil, dahl, chillies and rice on behalf of DPWA schools and orphanages;
Womens' co-operative tailoring unit to make uniforms for DPWA school children and others for commercial purposes;
Purchase of goats and cows for milk production for local use with the long-term aim of developing milk co-operatives and breeding goat farms.

Representatives of Women Connecting for Change are going to India in March 2005 (fully self-funded) to work with the DPWA women's self-help groups to identify further opportunities for small business development projects.

Through our fundraising dinners and other events we are aiming to raise $10,000.
Therefore any support you could give us would be greatly appreciated. Three very special evenings at the Spice Kitchen
Join renowned Indian chef and teacher Ragini Dey at her restaurant, Dhaba at the Spice Kitchen (242 Kensington Road, Leabrook) for three delicious and informative banquet evenings:

Thursday October 14 Banana Leaf Banquet: Featuring the cuisine of the East and South. The accent is on subtle spicing and lighter dishes often including fish and seafood, coconut, rice and root vegetables. Fill up the banana leaf plate with special regional dishes and delicious home-made relishes and chutneys.
Wednesday November 3 Diwali - the Hindu Festival of Light: Celebrate the triumph of good over evil with North Indian festive fare. Lots of interesting vegetarian street foods, such as samosas, and a particular focus on sweet dishes with names like gujia, kheer or coconut burfi.
Wednesday November 24 The Spice Kitchen Regional Indian cooking class and meal will explore some of the more popular dishes of the previous two evenings. Several dishes will be demonstrated and a two-course meal will be served.

Ragini Dey knows the vast repertoire of Indian cooking like no other chef in Adelaide. This is a chance to taste the flavours of authentic regional specialities, many of which never make it to ordinary Indian menus.
Cost per event $35pp including a glass of bubble on arrival.
