Rain – I hope you have all enjoyed the last few days. I am still awaiting for Fifth Creek which runs past my office window to start flowing….We can hope for a wet winter. On a sad note, Paul Herzich, who has been part of the SA Executive for the last twelve years from student rep to Honorary Secretary has decided to resign at the AGM later this year. His shoes are going to be hard to fill but if you would like to contribute to the Landscape Institute in South Australia, have an ability to take minutes and keep the committee in line and enjoy communicating with a wide variety of people please consider the position and talk to Paul or myself for more details. The AGM will be in August and there are always vacancies for new ideas. Your executive and other members are very busy at the moment. Interviews for this registration candidates are well under way, we have responded to the Lower Lakes weir EIS and most importantly planning is well advanced for the SA Awards. More details can be found below. CPD and social events are being arranged. Please support them where you can and advise any member of the executive committee of subjects you would like to see covered. Any assistance is always welcome. The next event on 13th May is Sheryn Pitman, discussing the Sustainable Landscapes Project she manages through the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. See the notice online. Alison Radford President |

AILA SA Awards 2009
AILA SA Awards 2009 2009 is once again the year of the Biennial State Awards, which are held to recognise and showcase the range and quality of local practitioners. The event aims to celebrate the landscape profession as well as recognise those who support the industry. The 2009 Awards event will be held later in the year in October. The jury for the upcoming awards is: - Graeme Hopkins (Jury Chair) - Planning SA (LA and Architect) The award categories remain unchanged from the 2007 awards format with the categories as follows:
There have been some changes to the awards themselves, in that the previous Merit and Commendation awards have been revamped with now just one main level of award - the (STATE) Landscape Architecture Award - with the State Landscape Architecture Award of Excellence and the State Medal for Landscape Architecture been the higher awards. The official announcement / launch of the awards and call for nominations will be held towards the end of May with approximately a 2 month period for the preparation of entries, followed by the jury assessment. Please stay tuned for further announcements regarding the awards. Nick Pearson

Temporary Weir at Pomanda Island
AILA SA has been proactive in voicing their concerns over the proposed weir at Pomanda Island, on the Murray River at the mouth of the Lower Lakes. The weir is the SA Government’s ‘last resort’ measure to securing Adelaide’s water supply. It is anticipated that the weir will go ahead if by January 2010, the water level in the Murray River falls below the designated trigger point. Current research is pointing to the inevitability of this occuring. Construction of the weir will cause irreversible damage to the Lower Lakes Region - an area of renowned natural beauty with fauna of conservation significance and a RAMSAR listed site of habitat for migratory birds.
