Casa monde Landscape lighting Award

Jack Birrell Architects Pty Ltd
Elaia Cafe Project Launceston

Jury Citation: The Casa Monde landscape lighting award recognises and promotes innovative lighting solutions in the landscape. It is awarded to the landscape project which best integrates innovative lighting design as an integral part of an outdoor design project. Other factors such as environmental and social responsibility are considered in the judging of this award.

The 2005 Case Monde Lighting Award goes to Jack Birrell Architects Pty Ltd for the Elaia Café project Launceston.

Jack Birrell employs competent and cost effective lighting techniques on the Elaia Café project to rectify the often neglected design area of the streetscape by night. Crisp high-level illumination contrasted by low level reflected canopy lighting and punctuating entrance lights adds vibrancy to this urban landscape.

The lighting concept was to create a subtle beacon out of the existing facade
in order to invite customers into the café,
whilst becoming an integral component of the existing streetscape.

The external lighting is all low voltage fittings detailed and located in order to express the existing relief of the façade, as well as provide a lighting solution that offered minimal glare and spill light to the surrounding neighborhood.

The up-lighters bounce light from the white fabric awning
creating an environment similar to a candlelit room.

The internal lighting is again all low voltage fittings, some incorporating red gels in order to reflect the cafés corporate colours and project them into the streetscape.

The remainder are located in such a way as to highlight artwork
and timber veneer feature walls.
