http://www.aila.org.au/time

Hosted by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects in partnership with the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects and the University of new South Wales.

THEME

The Theme that the competition entries must respond to is "Time".

Landscape architecture is an ideal medium to express TIME visually.

This competition challenges students of landscape architecture to explore the Conference theme of TIME through the process of site selection and design execution.

We invite participants to select a site with conditions which evoke the concept of TIME and to develop designs which investigate, interrogate, challenge and transform these conditions. The design proposals should also reveal something about the social, cultural, economic or political conditions that the form the site’s context.

Entrants should explore the theme of TIME through at least one of the three sub-themes:
          o TIME as Catalyst
          o Designing with TIME
          o TIME and Technology

see the conference page for more details:

http://www.aila.org.au/time/

and the article on TIME:

http://www.aila.org.au/time/theme.htm

The Site

Participants are invited to select their own local site. The site must not be bigger than 1 hectare/10,000m2, and must have inherent qualities relevant to the theme.

Sites and design proposals which consider one or more of the following sub-themes are encouraged:

Erosion/Weathering
History
Traces
Decay
Future
Urgency/Emergency
Seasons
Days
Renewal
Change Growth
Cycles
Circadian Rhythms
Evolution
Ephemeral /Transient
Geological Time

Eligibility

The competition is open to all students of Landscape Architecture.

Both individual and group submissions will be accepted, and each student or group is permitted only one entry.

Broad interdisciplinary submissions are welcomed, however, a landscape architecture student must lead the team of interdisciplinary students.

The number of members in each participating group shall not exceed five (5).

Collaborators and associates of the members of the jury and their relatives up to the third degree may not enter the competition.

Australian students of landscape architecture must be members of the AILA.

New Zealand students of landscape architecture must be members of the NZILA.

Other students should be a member of an IFLA member institute/organisation.

AILA reserves the right to refuse any entry at any stage of the process if requirements are deemed to have not been met.

Essential Feedback

Attribution: Ensure that you supply very clear and accurate information on the submission form on what attributions are to be used on the certificates.

Follow the guidelines: Do Not Get Carried Away. Do not attempt to over-design the submission in the hope of impressing the jury. Do not use unnecessary design elements such as collages or extra coloured graphics – all of this is undesirable and becomes annoying for juries trying to read many submissions. Keep it simple and communicate clearly with clear narratives and relevant high-quality images and graphics.

The Narrative: Address all the criteria. Keep the narrative simple. Ensure you highlight what makes the project unique, what makes the work stand-out, what particular issues were addressed and environmental components.

Documents: It is essential to provide a word document on the discs. The word documents form the basis for media releases and web sites. Do not supply this text component as part of a powerpoint presentation only – that is, by all means have the text component as part of your presentation (powerpoint, pdf etc) but you must also supply the same text as a word document. And do not forget to supply word/text versions of any captions.

Graphics/Photography: First ensure that all graphics and images are supplied digitally as required. If you use photographs, invest in having high quality images by someone who understands the power of good images.

You must supply the credit for any photographer.
