A Landscape Architecture International Conference CALL FOR PAPERS

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA®) and The New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA) are hosting The International Federation of Landscape Architects 2006 Eastern Region Conference 25 – 27 May 2006 Darling Harbour Convention Centre, Sydney, Australia.

Pre-conference activities, including a student workshop, will be held at UNSW on Thursday, prior to the official conference opening with a public lecture on Thursday evening, 25th May 2006 in the city.

Two full days of conference sessions, on Friday and Saturday, will feature Australian and international speakers, including practitioners from New Zealand, Asia and the South Pacific, practising Australian landscape architects and academics, and guests from related disciplines to provide a broad context for discussion.

Tours of Sydney’s best landscape designs will be organised.

The conference proceedings will be published, along with documentation of the entries and results of an international student design competition to be held in conjunction with the Conference. The publication will be produced by the Landscape Architecture Program in the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Theme

At this conference, national and international speakers will address the pivotal role of time and change in the practice of our profession and its cumulative effects on both contemporary society and the landscape.

The presentations will explore the theme of TIME from a variety of perspectives:
Time as Catalyst
Designing with Time
Time and Technology

Time as Catalyst (Theory & Concept) will include:
• The ephemeral qualities of landscape; aesthetics of landscape processes such as growth, weathering and decay;
• The pace of time and its landscape impact, such as rapid change in new cities;
• The concepts of time that describe our understanding of design, such as ‘contemporary’, ‘timelessness’, ‘of our time’, modern, post-modern, futuristic;
• Longevity and resilience of landscapes;
• The experience of landscape and time: high speed landscapes and slow speed landscapes.

.

Designing with Time (Design) will include:
• The art of maintenance, the maintenance regime, regimes of care, design by maintenance;
• Managing time: heritage landscapes;
• The politics of time: how the cycle of politics affects the delivery of landscape projects, for example the 3-year cycle vs the 20/50 approach;
• Designing for the unexpected time: disease, fire, flood, tsunamis, drought, salinity;
• Flexible landscapes: landscapes that adapt over time to suit changes in program.
• “Just in time” landscapes, i.e., the art of landscape installations and garden festivals.

Time and Technology (Design and Technique) will include:
• Modes of representation of time, modes of managing time;
• Using technology to map time/changes over time, using technology to design within the processes of time;
• Visualising time in the landscape design process.

Conference Organisation

Approximately 18 papers total will be selected for presentation at Forum Sessions within the two-day conference program.
A special session on the last day will bring together the themes of Forum Sessions and provide an opportunity for all delegates to share ideas put forward throughout the conference.
Please note that the conference format is still subject to change. In particular the format for the Forum Sessions is yet to be finalised.
