| Beacon Cove is located at Beach Road and Pier Street West,
Port Melbourne. The landscape architects' approach to the design of this prominent
bay-edge site was to explore a late 20th Century interpretation of the mid-modernist
landscape architects such as Thomas Church, Dan Kiley and Garrett Eckbo. The concept
sought to capture the clarity of line form achieved by this group in maritime California
in the similar coastal setting of Port Phillip Bay. The podium gardens demonstrate crisp
paving lines with panels of colour and texture employed throughout the planting design.
The public realm promenade affects a formalist approach with a distinctive rhythm
established for the ensemble of massed concrete steps, Phoenix Palms, nautical-inspired
elements such as oversized bollards together with chain connections, inlays of rail tracks
and pile markers.
The project provides the design of the private podium gardens and the public promenade
areas of the development. The private garden spaces and pool features are well detailed
with bold design treatments and a use of colour and texture that compliments the building
design. |
