| Mawson Place at Constitution Dock on Hobart's Waterfront is
designed as a contemporary place; a rediscovered primary city location. The site has solid
historical context - it was an important working dock from convict times until the 1950's,
and is still used by Hobart's pleasure craft for maintenance and for exhibitions. The
design uses vandal and maritime resistant materials and finishes, and employs glass
screens to provide sheltered nooks across the site, reducing the impact of prevailing
winds and traffic noise. Elements of the landscape design took clues from industrial and
maritime remnants. For example, timber seats were modified on stacks of wood delivered to
the wharf. |

The jury is pleased to see significant work being achieved at
Constitution Dock following years of indecision. The design resolution is bold. The seats
modelled on "stacks of wood delivered to the wharf side" are an excellent design
resolution.
The jury was impressed with the overall resolution of the project, and the solution is
considered to be exciting and worthwhile.
