| This project is the first stage of a master plan to be implemented as part
of the redevelopment of Moreland Council Civic Centre, the former Coburg Town Hall. It
is required to showcase the City's environmental commitment whilst meeting particular
functional demands such as providing a suitable civic address and entry experience,
outdoor seating areas and flexible flow-out space associated with the adjacent concert
hall.
Three design compositions tell the ecological and cultural stories of the region. A
double row of Allocasuarinas mulched with crushed red brick recall tree lined escarpments
and local brickworks. Basalt floaters are evoked with an elliptical seat wall and a tight
copse of Red Box represents woodland. A stone carpet of bluestone, mudstone and sandstone
represents the geology of the site.
Significantly, the project employs best practice in regard to use of recycled
materials, low embodied energy resource use, and the creative use of indigenous plants in
a formal setting. |
