Upfield Railway Line Habitat Landscape
Client:
Landscape Architect:
City of Moreland
Collie Landscape and Design Pty Ltd
The project seeks to establish a 15 kilometre long landscape within the public spaces and surplus land along the Upfield Railway Line. The site slices through Melbourne’s northern suburbs from Royal Park to Broadmeadows and passes through parks, highly urbanised areas, suburban area and a cemetery.

Collie facilitated collaboration between the adjoining cites of Moreland, Melbourne and Hume and between cities and the service provider, Bayside Trains. Collie also assisted by reviewing and comparing the strategic aims and policies of the client and partners.

This project shows that a railway line can and should be more than a piece of transport infrastructure.

Collie demonstrated how cost effective and sustainable habitats can be created within the tight confides of a railway corridor and particularly within the rigorous safety restrictions.

This project addresses the difficult question of how environmental values can be enhanced in a narrow, land locked urban setting with a range of physical and management constraints.

The jury considered that the project produces a strong and clear method of documenting analysis and that the study recommendations are practical and appropriate to the form of staged implementation required by the stakeholders.

Overall the project has produced a very clear and well documented plan for the future.
