The Yarrawonga Urban Design
Framework provides a broad-based, community endorsed urban master plan that guides both
local, economic and social initiatives.Yarrawonga is an active and growing regional
centre on the Murray River in Victorias north east. The river is dammed at this
point, creating Lake Mulwala. A sizable visitor community is present in the town all year
round, attracted by water sports, riverside camping and the environment of
Yarrawongas hinterland.
Although the town is economically and socially buoyant, there has for sometime been an
awareness that the morphology of the town, its layout, land-use pattern, movement routes,
relationship to the lake and appearance were in need of a thorough and community-inspired
review.
Development of the framework plan involved coordination of a consultant team that
included retail analysts, strategic and statuatory planners, traffic and parking
specialists. Extensive consultation with stakeholders and the wider community also took
place.
