This
project consists of the development of a strategic and comprehensive
landscape management plan for the well known Port Arthur Historic Site in
southern Tasmania. Its aim is to establish a long-term vision for landscape
associated with the site and a guide for management practices.
This
plan is secondary to the framework already established by the Conservation
Plan. Its direction provides a stronger policy direction for the
management, conservation and interpretation of the landscape values of the
Historic Site, within the context of State and Commonwealth heritage
legislation. The work is important because it will contribute to the
intended nomination of Port Arthur for a place on the World Heritage
register.
In its
accessible digital format, the plan provides detail to guide day-to-day work
decisions, as well as longer term interpretation and restoration
objectives. It was built up after detailed site investigation and
comprehensive community consultation.
The
extensive field work and other elements of the project have comprehensively
researched and carefully interpreted and recorded in the Management Plan
document. Its recommended protections are also to be incorporated into the
local government statutory planning scheme.
The plan
has been well received by the client (PAHSMA), who is in process of
implementing the broad-ranging recommendations.
