Jury Comments

Taylor Cullity Lethlean applies an integrated yet layered approach to the design of Grattan Plaza, which reveals new features on each visit. Through their successful interpretation of the site's past the design entices the imagination to escape. This project truly exhibits a collaborative process between landscape architect and artist.

Grattan Plaza before redevelopment.     Memory Pond - lighting as a reflection of the night sky on memory of the Billabong. The lighting is an integral part of the overall masterplan for Grattan Gardens.     View to Greville Street shopping precinct. Memory Pond forms the southern end to a linear park space that extends north to connect with a new community Centre.     Fountain detail. The bubbling water flows as a “well spring” enriching the plaza entrance.

Fountain detail. The fountains and lights form an association with water lilies drifting on the water’s surface.     Planting edge and view over lawn to Greville Street. A raised lawn invites relaxed passive occupation and a viewing platform to surrounds.     Six small fountains composed of circular stainless steel are loosely arranged to imbue a reference to water lilies. From the centre of the fountains water delicately rises from the earth.      The pattern of water and steel is enriched at night by with a myriad of blue light emitting devices (LEDS) that are fixed into the pavement.      Memory pond detail. The design was a process in which the conceptual strength of the artwork enriched and redefined the landscape, imbuing it with meaning.

LED and engraved text detail. Five word phrases, placed around the site, offer moments of meditation on place, action and silence. Language acknowledging historical memory of pre-settlement.     Central path link that connects to Grattan Park. The captured constellation of lights and the engraved text accent the formal geometry of the pedestrian walkway. The raised lawn and seating walls provide an elevated position to survey and interpret the landscape.     Plan of Memory Pond, Greville Street. The overall design threads a fine line between plaza, park and path and is composed of; formal entry walls, a raised lawn, wide central path and the artwork of Robert Owen.
