Jury Comments

The lawn ‘bowl’ of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl has been carefully refurbished to improve site lines, lawn quality and integration of services. The result is a sensuous surface, which invites contact – the ultimate lawn in form and feel.

Lawn as ‘monoculture’, but lawn as cultural icon, its amphitheatre form responding in inverse relationship to the structure’s canopy. Who can resist the invitation to ‘de-stress’ in landscape, on this perfect green carpet with the sky as canopy?

Aerial of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl showing the redevelopment of the public realm. The landscape design and documentation of the site nestles the amphitheatre into the Domain parklands.     Concept Plan of the Sidney Myer Music bowl. A place of cultural significance hosting many Melbournian gatherings which have become part of our collective memory.     The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is a cultural icon of Melbourne reflecting a long history in both architecture and surrounding landscape and parkland.     The refurbishment of the site saw the coalescing of the historical architectural form with the expanse and subtlety of the contoured hill and landform.

Concerts on the events lawn at dusk. Careful consideration of site lines to the stage from the new auditorium including grassed terraces was a major requirement of the project.     The simplicity of the new design engages both performers and audiences in the ambience of festival and concert, merging seamlessly into the adjacent parkland.     A conversation was established between canopy and landscape. This was to be Melbourne’s premier outdoor theatre.      Materials and detailing were selected as robust and durable, contrasting and complimenting the mass and flow of the curving concrete with the lightness, elegance and tensile strength of steel, subtly integrated into the flow of the wider landscape.     Crisply graded landforms mirror the arcing form overhead accentuating its tectonic qualities and creating a reciprocity between land and sky.     Bowl at a night time public event. The open space and building surrounds were technically designed for longevity, high public use and ease of maintenance to deliver a renowned and well recognized open-air stadium.
