Interweave: Barkly-Hopkins Street Planters
Landscape Architect: Site Office Landscape Architecture
Client: Maribyrnong City Council

In Interweave Site Office has created a streetscape installation for the City of Maribyrnong that references existing history and character of the precinct while creating a unique and iconic presence within Footscray. The moveable planting units are woven from two types of rope calling up references to the Kinnears Rope Works, a major employer in the area for 100 years, as well as the vibrant colours and shapes of the street’s physical context. The baskets interact with street users on a human scale, encouraging people to lean on them and touch them, all the while providing the necessary growing conditions for the tree in a strong and resilient package.

Interweave is a striking example of a unique fit for purpose design application that creates and activates a place. The planting baskets allow an infusion of green into an otherwise hard streetscape while still allowing for flexibility within the urban realm, emphasis seasonal change and support the activation of central Footscray.
