CREATING BETTER PARKS
Landscape Architect: Brimbank City Council
Client: Brimbank City Council

Maribyrnong River - The Lakes

Faced with a history of neglect towards their public parks and a low user satisfaction rating, the City of Brimbank took on the challenge to turn this around with their Creating Better Parks policy.

The policy presents a clear structure for reform, strategically assessing the need for a variety of improved parklands across the whole municipality. Strengthened by a thorough engagement with the community and strong support from local decision makers, the policy represents a new level of commitment by the council’s growing landscape architecture team.

This policy stood out from other open space planning projects due in particular to its rapid implementation of new parks, a commitment to continued spending on new projects and a notable shift in its asset management strategy. The Creating Better Parks policy represents a synthesis of various planning strategies that together provide for a sustainable network of public parks in the City of Brimbank, propelling the district to a new level of excellence in open space provision.
