CITY OF STONNINGTON PUBLIC REALM STRATEGY
Landscape Architect: ASPECT Studios Pty Ltd
Client: City of Stonnington

Landscape architecture is increasingly playing a greater role in all parts of the public realm and not just parks. The Stonnington Public Realm Strategy provides a strategic vision for the entire municipality in addition to exploring the parameters of public space and the future demands for such spaces.

The project applies a broad approach to the definition of public space which includes the contribution that streetscapes, linear trails and waterways make to the public realm. Research and analysis inform the needs for open space provision along with making consideration for future demands such as demographic change and climate change. Open space provision was assessed relative to comparable municipalities to establish benchmarks for spatial provisions as well as open space quality. The strategy also identified the need to review and update the document to respond to the changing dynamics (both physical and social) of the local community.

The jury was impressed by the comprehensive nature of the study. Research, analysis and theory were translated to a clearly legible report with plans and diagrams. The document provides the City of Stonnington with a strategic vision for the planning, design and management of open spaces across the municipality.
