THE HARBOUR FAMILY AND CHILDREN'S CENTRE
Landscape Architect: HASSELL in collaboration with Children's Landscapes Australia
Client: City of Melbourne

This project is both well designed and beautifully executed.

This is particularly impressive given the site location, on a rooftop. The jury was impressed by the attention to detail clearly demonstrated in the carefully considered use of plant species and provision of shade. A range of tactile experiences is also provided by using a wide selection of materials and surfaces. The area will be not only be a valuable play experience for children, but will also encourage an understanding of, and involvement in, food production.

The rooftop location and safety standards for children's play areas were always going to be significant challenges for the project team, but the final outcome is exciting and well resolved.

The project not only sets a benchmark for child care centre outdoor areas, it also challenges us to use all rooftop areas more creatively.
