The AILA WA Commendation Award for Design

Tract (WA) Pty Ltd
Coal Dam Park, Midland Redevelopment
Client: Midland Development Authority

Citation: The successful design of this park revolves around the sensitive retention of the historically significant coal dam and the industrial elements that have also survived.

The jury was impressed with how these elements were integrated into a new design for a park that will essentially service a new residential community. The use of the former railway bridge to incorporate aeration is a particularly innovative aspect of this project.

The AILA WA Commendation Award for Planning
in Landscape Architecture

Tract (WA) Pty Ltd
University of United Arab Emirates Masterplan

Citation: A complex and large-scale project with many issues, the preparation of the Landscape Masterplan for this difficult site required detailed consideration and understanding of a wide range of site planning, cultural and climatic conditions.

The jury were impressed by the scale and breadth of issues that were considered with this unique and culturally sensitive project.

Student Awards in Landscape Architecture

Timothy Nicols
University of WA
Project: Civic Redevelopment - Landscape City

Citation: The project makes no apologies for its basis in an approach developed by Koolhaas in the competition for Parc de la Villette in 1983. Its merit is in recognition of the relevance of this approach to a challenge of an entirely different type and scale, and the intelligence with which it has been applied. The jury was particularly impressed by the rigour of the proposal, within an appreciation of the unpredictable nature of the city and the extended time frame of urban development.

........

Ilze Untins
University of WA
Quarantine Park, Bicton Perth

Citation: Taking its cues from the steep topography of the site, remnants of past occupation, and the temporal nature of landscape, this scheme achieves an elegant balance between fixed and variable components, creating a park that offers a wide range of possible activities and invites the active participation of the surrounding community in its use and continuing development. Especially successful is the park's relationship to the river and the celebratory treatment of the water's edge which combines functionality with riparian markers and traces of history.
