Media Statement on the AILA WA 2010 Awards

The biennial AILA WA awards showcased the great work Landscape Architects are currently undertaking in Western Australia. The awards criteria focused on addressing the 5 core principles if the Institute; Valuing the landscape, Protect enhance and regenerate, Designing with respect, Designing for the future and Embracing responsive design. These principles direct the work undertaken by all Registered Landscape Architects in Australia.

This year a range of entries were received for projects in regional areas, demonstrating increasing involvement by Landscape Architects in work emphasizing the building of sustainable communities in arid zones. The Jury were impressed with some elegant, disciplines and highly detailed design with many entries demonstrating water sensitive solutions and innovations in the sustainable use of materials.

Submissions recognized with an award were those which most successfully strengthened, reinvented or created identity and sense of place. There were five award winners.

City of Perth were awarded the Design in Landscape Architecture Award of Excellence for the Northbridge Piazza and the Award in Design for their City Laneways project – Howard Lane Upgrade. The Jury recognized its success in encouraging activation and utilization of utility areas.

The Planning in Landscape Architecture Award was given to Ecoscape Australia for the Lake Ballard Management Plan. The Jury recognized the benefits for development of cultural and environmental awareness in the preparation of a plan which clearly maps objectives and strategies for sustainable management.

Plan (E) was awarded the Land Management Award of Excellence for the Champion Lakes International Rowing Course project. The Jury considered this project as an excellent example for management of complex ecosystems within the context of a developing urban environment,

James Quinton received The Future Leaders Student Award for his project A Tour of the Ashfield Flats. The Jury appreciated the student’s exploration of the qualities of discarded/remnant landscapes through narrative, brining into focus new ways to understand and value otherwise forgotten spaces.

The Jury appreciates the challenges of Landscape Architectural practice to deliver sustainable and culturally enriching outcomes within increasingly complex environmental and social contexts.

It is encouraging to note from the awards entries, the expanding reach and influence of Landscape Architects to make significant contributions to WA places and environments.
