International Key Note- Gunther Vogt

The Square & The Park Presentation by Acclaimed Swiss designer Günther Vogt
Günther Vogt 1957 in Balzers, Principality of Liechtenstein) is the founder of Vogt Landscape Architects in Zürich with branch offices in Berlin, London and Paris. Günther Vogt became internationally known through projects such as the exterior of the Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London, the Allianz Arena football stadium in Munich or the Masoala Hall of the Zurich Zoo. Günther Vogt has been a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich since 2005. In 2010, he opened Case Studio VOGT, which serves as a platform for research and exhibitions. In 2012 he was visiting professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In the same year he was awarded the Prix Meret Oppenheim of the Federal Office of Culture.

International Key Note- Julia Czerniak

The Square & The Park  presentation by North American academic and critic: Julia Czerniak
Associate Dean and Professor of Architecture at Syracuse University and a specialist in landscape theory and criticism.

Julia Czerniak is associate dean and professor of architecture at Syracuse University where she teaches studios as well as seminars on landscape theory and criticism. Czerniak is educated both as an architect (Princeton University, M. Arch 1992) and landscape architect (Pennsylvania State University, BA 1984) and her research and practice draws on the intersection of these disciplines. Although the techniques, scales and products of her research vary, Czerniak’s work focuses on the physical and cultural potentials of urban landscapes. Recent design research advances landscape as a protagonist in the remaking of Rust-Belt cities, from a series of public space interventions along a derelict creek to ecologically and spatially rich streetscapes for a newly planned campus of Syracuse University.

Czerniak’s work as a designer is complemented by her work as educator and writer, which in all cases advances design as a way to enable new ways of seeing, imagining, valuing and acting within our challenged anthropocentric environment. She is a prolific writer and has produced influential landscape architecture publications such as Large Parks (Princeton Architectural Press) and Case: Downsview Park Toronto (Prestel) which focus on contemporary design approaches to public parks and the relationship between landscape and cities. Czerniak lectures and teaches internationally, most recently delivering keynote lectures at the Onassis Foundation in Athens, the Large Parks in Large Cities conference in Stockholm and in the Open Space Summit in Brussels. She is currently the guest editor of JoLA 31 (Journal of European Landscape Architecture) on Landscape Criticism as well as the chief curator of the international conference Designing WATER, sponsored by Longwood Gardens and the American Academy in Rome.

International Key Note- Kyung-Jin Zoh

The Square and The Park presentation By South Korean academic and designer: Kyung-Jin Zoh

Professor of Landscape Architecture at Seoul National University and chief advisor of Parks and Green Space in Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Kyung-Jin Zoh who was born in Seoul, studied landscape architecture at Seoul National University and completed his Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a professor of Graduate School of Environment Studies and a former director of Environmental Planning Institute, Seoul National University. He wrote and edited many books on contemporary landscape in Korea while participating in many public landscape projects. Now, he served as both a chief advisor of park and green space in Seoul Metropolitan City and a master planner of Seoul Botanical Park which opened in May, 2019. Recently, his research themes such as place memory, observatory, soundscape have been related to peace tourism along DMZ areas. He is one of curators for DMZ exhibition at Culture Station Seoul 284 from March 22 to July 7, 2019.

Jane Irwin is director of JILA, a small multidisciplinary team with projects ranging from garden courtyards to city making.    Crossing scale and project typologies, the common thread within our work is a process that is artistic, flexible and appropriate.  We cultivate an informed and specific design language that speaks to the authenticity of place and its rich cultural associations.

The Materiality of the Square-Mark Jacques

Mark Jacques is Director of Openwork, an office undertaking projects in landscape architecture, urban design, research and speculation. In 2015, Mark was appointed Professor of Architecture (Urbanism) Industry Fellow within RMIT's School of Architecture and Urban Design. Openwork operates in four modes: as a landscape architectural consultancy providing the design and documentation of public places; as an urban design studio providing input to plans and policies that will enable future public places; as a research lab, aligned with RMIT exploring counter-factual futures for the city and as a speculative office, investing consulting profits into undertaking the types of projects that no one has yet asked them to do.

The Materilaity of the Square- Huicheng Zhong

Huicheng Zhong is the managing partner and creative director of Lab D+H. With offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Seoul and Los Angeles, Lab D+H projects have been recognized with many international awards. Huicheng is particularly interested in research, education, and pro-bono endeavors, where he aims to connect Design with Hope. Prior to founding Lab D+H, he worked at SWA Los Angeles.  Huicheng received his Master of Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and his Master of Urban Planning from Beijing Forestry University.

The Park as an Ongoing Process- Julian Raxworthy

Dr Julian Raxworthy has taught, researched and practised landscape architecture and urban design in Australia, Europe, the US, South Africa and, currently, in Dubai. He completed his PhD with ATCH (Architecture, Theory, History & Criticism) at the University of Queensland, where his currently Honorary Associate Professor. His book Overgrown: practices between landscape architecture and gardening was published in 2018 by The MIT Press, for which he received a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

The Park as an Ongoing Process- Richard Walley

Dr Richard Walley OAM is a Noongar man of Western Australia. Richard works in his family owned company – Aboriginal Productions and Promotions and is a statesman for Noongar culture and developer of Kaart Koort Waarnkiny and Aboriginal Engagement Strategy. Richard continues to push boundaries, whilst always focussing on the bigger ‘community’ picture.

‘OMG there’s an Anthropocene in my Backyard’

Conference opening and keynote address by Festival creative director, Professor Richard Weller (University of Pennsylvania).

At the same time that the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016, the International Commission on Stratigraphy is expected to formally announce the dawn of the Anthropocene Epoch: a new geological period defined by the fact that the earth’s systems are now fundamentally determined by human activity. The philosophical and practical consequences couldn’t be greater: in short, nature is no longer that ever providing thing ‘out there’, it is, for better or worse, something we are creating. The landscape of the Anthropocene is a cultural landscape and therefore a question of design. Read more.

Keynote Address by Professor Clive Hamilton AM & Q&A with 7 Curators.

Clive Hamilton is an Australian author and public intellectual. Since 2008 he has been Professor of Public Ethics at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, a joint centre of Charles Sturt University and the University of Melbourne. He is based at Charles Sturt University’s Canberra campus.

New Natures?

The New Natures international and multidisciplinary panel consists of ecologists, scientists, climate change experts, planners and landscape architects, who will explore and question the way in which we conceptualize and transform landscapes from an ecological perspective.

New Cities? 

Cities are the points at which our effect on atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, biospheric systems is most pronounced, and where solutions to many of the resultant problems will need to be put into action.

New Stories?

In the softened rhetoric of ‘place making’ master planning appears to recognise the value of human attachments in the production and maintenance of sustainable designed environments. The drive to privatise public space and control public behaviours appears to retreat in favour of multi-actor engagements with sense of place, while broadly ecological models of integration appear to offer an attractive program for community involvement and environmental literacy.

New Signs?

It's said that the Anthropocene epoch began on July 16, 1945 with the Trinity atomic tests. Captured at 24 fps on a Mitchell 35mm Movie Camera at a distance of 9140 metres from Ground Zero, there could be no more succinct and terrifying image of the Anthropocene. In silent frames we see a new sign emerging full of fear and ingenuity, violence and horrible beauty. It seems fitting that the Mitchell was the most common of Hollywood cameras, as if the machine manufactured icons, making and interpreting them, as if the machine made catastrophes and fantasies real.

New Techniques?

The rapidly unfolding implications of the Anthropocene call for new design approaches from all disciplines of the built environment. General principles of sustainability and ecology are now challenged by demands to demonstrate a greater level of complexity and performance. This emphasis is accompanied by a vast volume of Big Data which is increasingly informing the future planning and design of our cities. Data explored with digital tools is central to both understanding the implications of climate change and establishing the solution.

New Practices?

We are now entering into an unprecedented age where rapid urbanisation and the need for social cohesion and equity are at a tipping point with post carbon futures and urban liveability. There is a need to invent new forms of practice that build ethical futures where economic and cultural capital centre on social cohesion, transactions are marked by reciprocity, trust and cooperation and we produce services and landscapes not for developers’ profit margins, but for a common good.

Policies and guidelines are put into place supporting innovative solutions to conserve, retain and reuse our most valuable water resource.

Sustainable surface water management is an integral part of the planning process. Urban designers need to consider managing the quantity as well as the quality of water that is discharged after it has been captured and stored. 

Geocellular systems have been used for a number of years and are a widely accepted method of creating infiltration and detention systems. When properly integrated, they can enable stormwater discharge at a slower more natural rate. This protects the stormwater system, prevents erosion and increased flow to receiving waters. Pollutants, debris and sediment can be removed from the water so it can be harvested for reuse in parklands, sports fields, commercial agriculture and residential gardens.
