AILA reforms governance and amends Constitution

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) has passed a series of changes to the Constitution following a General Meeting in Sydney on 24 May. 

The changes include the addition of an Acknowledgement of Country, an edit of the document so it is gender neutral and reforming the cycle that Directors are appointed to the Board. 

“AILA has been on a tremendous governance journey the last five years or so and we’ve achieved a lot,” AILA President Shaun Walsh said. 

“We know governance reform has to be a continuous process so I’m extremely proud of the changes that the members endorsed.”

“The inclusion on an Acknowledgement of Country is an historic moment for AILA and builds on the work we have been doing as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan. It is timely ahead of Reconciliation Week.”

“We now have recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in our most significant governance document, sending the message that Reconciliation needs to be in everything we do.”

“The other key change is a modernization of election terms for directors. We will now have a staggered appointment process so there is continuity from year-to-year for our strategic oversight.”

“On behalf of the Board I would like to thank the members who contributed to the process and participated in the General Meeting.”
